Well the time is moving faster than ever ,and Tuck is of the frame of mind that he needs his own boat. We are thinking it needs to be small enough to pull with and 6cyl. vehicle. He wil mostly be using it on p4 and maybe I might borrow it for a Rainy river run He currently has about 2k saved and hopes to have a little more from some summer work. Looking for suggestions / opinions on a boat with a 25hp or so .

A Lund Rebel is a nice boat to pull with a v6. I see a lot of them on craigslist with a 25 for around $2500. I own one with a 40 horse tiller and love it.

i basically agree, but would only add that for a FIRST boat in the NORTH country, a deep vee is wise. I’ve sunk so many over the years, that if the first had not been deepvees, i probably wouldn’t be around to talk much about it. ground him if he doesn’t wear a jacket…

i also wanted to mention that these days nearly all the gear you need can be gotten off of ebay. Good lesson for a young fellow…

A Lund Rebel with a 25hp or so would be a sweet boat for a 15-16 year old kid. I had a 1953 Crestliner 14′ boat with a 197? Evinrude 9hp. No electronics.

+3 on the Lund. Also a good leson in maintainance and pride of ownership. Good luck!

I know alot of you folks love your tillers. But a 15-16 footer with a single console with a 35 horse may be something to consider.

I have a boat that you might be interested in.

Its a 1987 16.5 foot Northwoods v-hull fishing boat with a 1995 40 hp Evinrude outboard with tilt/trim. The boat has a steering console and front and rear casting decks. Comes with 55lb. bow mount Minn Kota Powerdrive trolling motor and an Eagle FishElite 480 fishfinder/GPS at the console. Boat has large livewell, four storage compartments, navigation lights, bilge pump, two pedestal seats, and rod holders. Comes with two good batteries, one deep cycle for trolling motor and one starter/deep cycle battery. The Evinrude outboard runs great, and top speed is about 30 mph. Shorelander roller trailer.

I pull it with a v6 ranger very easily.

PM me if you are interested.

Another good choice would be an Alumacraft Lunker 16.
A good boat that should be a few bucks cheaper than a Lund so he can buy gas and baits.

    2004 Champion 206 with a 225 EFI….

Actually – there was an awesome boat on Craigslist – that just sold for $1500.

Bass Tracker with a 25HP merc.

    Nice boat

I have a 14 ft Lund I think its a rebel.. with a 25 hp merc on it. Its perfect for what your looking for. Try to get a wide boat though…. Also get good electronics the first time around if he is going to get them.

Yep, $2500 for the boat motor and trailer, and $3k for the graph.

This alumacraft 145 has been a great river boat for me. As you can see I needed a small boat to fit in my micro-sized city garage and I pull it with a 4-cyl. Remember that smaller boats don’t plane out that well though. The fact that the planing surface is small coupled with a heavy 4-stroke zuk means the boat is underpowered. But with only one person or two small people and the boat will do 22 downstream with a tailwind.

I’ve got a lot of life changes happening and won’t be able to fish much after this summer…I’ll be sad to see her go.

Good luck in your search…the kid must be exicted!

I would look at a Lowe or similar wide flat bottom. More versatile than a modified V for shallow backwater and smaller rivers/streams/lakes in SE Mn. I like their stability over the mod V also. Go 14′ and put a 15 hp 2 stroke OMC motor on it (these motors are close to impossible to harm and cheap to fix if you do)…great 1 or 2 man set up…don’t ever think of 3 in the boat.
