My brother-in-law is looking at combos. For his use and the money, I came up with this:

Pflueger Pres. reel size 30 – $59 (cost must be under $60)
St. Croix Eyecon 6’3″ MLXF – $110 (cost must be under $120)

Wants to get many uses out of it: Lindy rigging, bobber fishing, pitching jigs, and crappie fishing.

He can’t stand a long rod either. Uses mono exclusively.

Soooooo, anybody got any other suggestions for him?

One I got last year was a cabelas tourney trail that I really like. Even better it was free with my rain gear purchase. I put a pflueger on that too

Scott when you throw rigging and casting light jigs… (crappie or walleye) in the mix, the 63 is too short IMHO… I would move up to the 66MLF for a better all purpose rod. I’d use a light (4#) Sufix Siege for Crappie and 6# for Walleye and that rod will be sweet…

The Eyecons have a “softer” tip than the higher priced St. Croix Models and the MLF will be fine for crappie.

Yep, I agree Tom. I am going to push him to the 66MLF if I can.

If not, I think the Eyecon 63MLXF is a good price point choice for what he wants. That President size 30 reel should fit it nicely too. I wish he’d jump up a bit in money and take the Arbor though…

Good choice on the reel. Also check out the Fenwick Elite Tech Walleye Rods. Can get a 6’6″ or 6’9″.

Just paid my Cabelas visa and in their sale flier they have a Pflueger President xtse spinning combo including an IM8 rod for 89.99. Might be worth a look. Plus you get 15% back in club points if you are a member.

BnM Sam Heaton Super Sensitive – 7′ $43.00
    Pflueger president 6725 or 6925 – $60

Sam Heaton’s are the best crappie rod, for the money, I’ve ever owned. I like them better that my Avid’s and they are 1/4 the cost!
