Powerdrive 80# vs. Terrova 55#????

    Hi All,

This is my first post here, so wanted to say Hi before I ask my question. I’m a multispecies fisherman with a new (to me) 94 Crestliner Sportfish 175 with a 90hp yamaha. Just picked it up in January for a very nice price. Came with lots of goodies too.

One of the goodies was a Powerdrive v2 80# 24v with autopilot. Very nice trolling motor. I was doing a little reading on this, and I found that a lot of people prefer the terrova over the powerdrive.

Reason I bring that up is that I have a 12v 55# Terrova from my old boat, which also has autopilot on it. My dilemma stems from the fact that everything I read seems to have people preferring the terrova over the powerdrive.

My Terrova worked great on my old boat which was a 17′ as well. I guess I’m asking for some opionons on which trolling motor I should keep and reasons why?

I do like the unlocking mechanism better on the terrova than the powerdrive, but the 80# over the 55# seems like a pretty good benefit too.

    Any suggestions?

I’d add I-Pilot to the PowerDrive V2 and call it good! In the long run, you will not be happy with a 12volt motor.

First of all welcome aboard! I’m sure you are going to get some very good info from the members here.

Second I would go with the higher thrust motor. There are always times that you need more thrust.

Im a Terrova guy but if your 2 options are the Terrova #55 in 12 volt and a Power Drive #80 in 24 volt and they both have auto pilot I would stick with the Power Drive for the more power and 24 volt system.

IMO Terrovas do deploy and stow better and they seam over all more durrable ezpecially in the pedal. But if there both paid for…. Or sell both and get a Terrova #80 with Ipilot!

    Welcome to the site!

I think the Power Drive V2 tops out at 70 lbs. of thrust and 24 volts.

I would prefer more power to the easier deployment of the Terrova.

Or you could sell the PD and upgrade to an 80 lb. Terrova.

    Good luck with your decision.

I have a 55 lb Terrova on a 16 ft Sylvan Backtroller with a 60 HP on it. While I am happy with it, I would not suggest it for a boat bigger than mine.

The 12v is virtually worthless for that size of boat. 24v/80# is the way to go. Just as Jon said, you could just add the i pilot feature to your 24v/70#. I have never used the 70# but wonder if it might come in shy… How do you use the motor? River, high wind, pulling spinners????

I would also mention that 54″ is as short as I would go in shaft length with 60″ being the best for that boat.

If you are dead set on the Terrova, sell both of them and then buy new 24v/80#/60″.

Oops, I need to restate , both the terrova and the powerdrive have iPilot. I’m not awake yet, was up too late and up too early.

The 55# terrova worked great on my bluefin spectrum 17′, got her up to almost 3mph gps, but my crestliner is a lot bigger than my bluefin was.

I was also thinking that if I hooked the terrova 12v up in parallel I’d have some good power behind it.

    Optimal situation, a 80# Terrova.
As someone else mentioned, maybe try to sell both 55# Terrova & 72# Powerdrive and make a good start towards the far better.
Easy for me to say, it’s not my money.
Terrova w/i-pilot is hard to beat though.

Welcome to IDO. Now plan on getting less and less done, and more and more hanging out here.

Another vote for Terrova 80# with I-Pilot. If you have to use one of the two motors you have, keep the 70# PowerDrive.

I had a 55 terrova on a 16 foot Fisher with a 75hp motor, it worked pretty well, but I’d not use it on anything bigger.

    Will it work?
Sure but a 80 will work much better.

I think I agree with those who say to sell both and go with a long shaft 80 Terrova, I have one on my 185 Alumacraft and am more than happy with it.
Plus the 24 volt set up will give you longer battery life normally.

Might depend on types of lakes you fish, farm ponds and smaller lakes may not need the extra power, but it sure comes in handy on the larger lakes or in windy conditions..imho
    Welcome btw

I don’t know why, but I hadn’t thought of selling both motors and getting a terrova 80#. I think that’s what I’m going to do, because I really do like the terrova more than the powerdrive.

Thanks for all the input, and the welcome to the site!

Welcome. Keep in mind you are talking to a bunch of river rats mainly here. If you spend most of your time fishing on a lake that isn’t big water, you would be fine with either thing. The Terrovas are very nice. I wish I had one.

I’m a bit of a river rat myself, tho I do a lot of lake fishing too. My favorite river is the Rum River, although I’m heading down to Redwing this Sunday for some cold water Sauger and Walleye.

I caught a 29 1/2″ walleye on the Rum last year. My largest fish caught while using my own gear and my own boat. I did catch about a 35″ northern a few years ago on Mille Lac’s, but that was on a company fishing trip.

A 29″er out of the Rum????? Dang, that’s impressive. I used to live on the Rum. Loved living there. It is surprising what lives in that little bit of water.

Just a fyi looking forward. If you put I-Pilot on a Terrova you can still use the foot pedal. If you put I-Pilot on a power drive the foot pedal is useless.

Take the IPilot out of your existing Terrova and transfer it to the new one… Just dont try to sell it as a IPilot unit.

Rarely if ever do I disagree with JJ, and I think his advice is again 100%, that’s what Id do.

Personally I’ve had power drives and currently a terrova, unless stepping up to a 36v system, there is very little reason good reason to justify the additional cost of a terrova, and IMHO not very good bang for the buck, the 70# will be just fine with some good batteries, I thought my 80 terrova was underpowered a bit, until I changed the old batteries and gained a little more than .5mph…

I have iPilot in both the Terrova and the Powerdrive.

I’m thinking i’m going to sell both of them and just get a Terrova 80. I really don’t like the deployment system on the powerdrive. I guess I’m spoiled by my Terrova.

What would be fair prices to ask for a Terrova 55 with iPilot, and a Powerdrive 70# with iPilot?

Well, I’ve decided to sell both my Terrova 55# and the Powerdrive #70. I’ve sent messages to the people who emailed me already.

Thanks for all the input everyone gave,
