I just recieved an old 76 tri-hull from my mother in law. It has an old Johnson rock crusher on the back I think its 115 horse. Im thinking of adding a 4 stroke 90 horse with tilt and trim. any advice if this is possible, and if they take trades on such an old motor. I was told this Johnson really sucks down the gas.

    Thank You

I would have an awful hard time dropping 10K on a 4 stroke to put on a $500 boat. You’d probably be much better off buying a used boat/motor combo.

If you’re dead set on repowering this rig, I’d guess you won’t get more than $500 or so in trade if anything. You could maybe sell privately for a little more, but 36 year old motors don’t sell for much these days.

Good luck, I hope you end up getting the right rig for you.

Before you put any money/effort into it, make sure the transom isn’t rotted out. We made that mistake with a free tri-hull.

For what you’ll spend on a motor, you will never get it out of that old of a boat.
Find an $8,000 boat WITH a 4 stroke on it. You’ll be happier longer.

X2 I made the same error and just about sent the motor to the bottom of the lake. I know that Johnson is heavy, but how does it compare to a 90 hp 4-stroke? Today’s boats are radically modified to carry and perform with the extra weight of a 4-stroke.

X3 I would sell the boat and motor outright and buy a different rig, trust me you will be much happier besides being a very old motor a tri-hull is the roughest running boat on the water.

Free boats are great but a 76 tri-hull??
