I would like to know if “premium” oils are worth the additional cost. The price spread of $10 to $20 per gallon is substantial and it would be nice to know what is in the jug for the extra 10 bucks. Would like very much to hear any input.

    Thanks,
    Charlie

Are you looking at crankcase oil, oil to mix with fuel,
or gear oil for the lower end?
    What kind/year of outboard?
    Is it oil injected?

    Oil to mix with fuel(50:1).

Sorry for the haste. Not injected. Motor is a 1998 Mercury 25HP.

    Thanks again,

    $10 difference per gallon, @50:1 =
$10 more per 50 gallons of gas
average tank is 5gal = $1 more per tank
The cost of gas will fluctuate that much if gas moves $.20 .
Myself, I don’t really believe there’s much difference between them.
    Surf the brandnames website,
and see if their hype makes any logical sense at all.
I think the main thing is keeping water out of the gas.

AS told to me….There is only a couple of outfits that make boat oil. It is all contracted. I think BellRay used to make a lot of it. Maybe someone else has the corner on it now.

The difference is the additives. Don’t ask me what they all are.

The motor companies blend the oil the way they see fit for their engines.

TC-W3 is just a rating. The motor companies exceed that rating. Off brands and house brands meet the rating. It is just a rating. There is no higher than TC-W3. There used to be TC-W2 but notice it no longer around. All engine manufactors now require TC-W3.

I don’t know what the bloody heck TC-W3 means.

But I ran Quicksilver Premium Plus in my 200 EFI. I’m not taking chances.

CHRarick, this question has been asked many time and many ways. Personally I don’t think it’s ever been answered good enough to sway a person either way.

I think it’s really up to the individual and what they are comfortable with. There are people that burn premium gas in an engine that calls for regular. My truck AND boat run smoother and faster everytime my wife gets done washing and waxing them. It’s really your choice.

    Briank,
Just checked with spouse. She sez she’s not really interested in washing/waxing my truck or boat. After 48 years, I guess the honeymoon is over.
Also, I’d say you’ve got it pretty good!

For those who use Quick Silver Premium, Sams Club has it for $11.28 per gallon.

Hey! I didn’t welcome you to the board….WELCOME!

Although I do have it REAL good, if my wife read my posts…my honeymoon would be over too!

My boat goes fast and smooth when I wax it..but faster and smoother when she waxes it.

Getting back to oil… I still have a hard time understanding the differant oils in the lower end. I understand that some lubes will remove heat faster than others…but, these gears are sitting in a water bath and assuming break in is over and all the shavings are removed…how far does that heat have to be moved? The water is always moving around the lower end…I’m still thinking that peanut butter would work in there…creamy and low carb of course…(That’s a JOKE! I don’t want to hear anyone putting Skippy in their lower end and complaining to me that it burnt up! )

I’ve been using that Quick Silver from Sams Club for a few years now. Good stuff and cheap!

Brian, There are additives in the lower unit lube to keep it from bubbling and turning into a useless foam. Forget the peanut butter idea.

My point exactly! You don’t have to add anything to peanut butter to keep it from bubbling !

I made the mistake of putting chunky in once. I learned the hard way.

Also, I really think discussions on guys lower units is better off on another website

I have had several years of good luck using Amsoil in my outboard and snowmobiles. I have used others but I think synthetic is worth the few extra bucks especially on bigger engines.
