Power connector for Universal Sonar 2

How does the Universal Sonar 2 on Minn Kota trolling motors supply power to the fish finder unit? Do you have to run power from the fish finder to the battery with the original power cable from the unit or does the separate adapter cable that you can get from Minn Kota for your specific fish finder supply both power and connection to the transducer? I need to know if I have to get a new cable for my fish finder or if the adapter for the Universal Sonar 2 will do it.

On my setup (Minnkota Genesis) the Universal Sonar adapter only carries the transducer data. You still have to power the Fish locator.

Ok. Did you guys hook up the power for the fish finder to the trolling motor battery or the starting/accessory battery? My trolling motor is 24 volts so I’m going to hook up 2 12volt batteries in a series for it. Can I hook up my fish finder to this setup or do I have to wire it all the way to the back of the boat to my starting/accessory battery?

Run your electronics off your starting battery. You can’t run them off the trolling motor batteries if you have a 24 volt motor. You shouldn’t run them off the TM battery anyway as you are likely to get interference.

I would agree that you should run the locator off the starting battery, but you could run it off a trolling motor battery if you had to even if the motor was a 24 volt. As long as you hook up the negative and positive on the same trolling motor battery it will pull just 12 volts. I ran one off my trolling motor battery for my bow mount locator that I used maybe 5% of the time back in the 90’s, and it worked fine. I have 2 trolling motors now one 36v(bow), and one 24v(motor mount). The 24 volt is wired with the negative on the first battery in the series of three, and positive wire is on the positive post on the middle battery pulling 24 volts.

Thanks for the information. That answers my questions.
