For the last couple of years I’ve been replacing my plugs with the resistor plugs Merc calls for on my ’01 Merc 90 two stroke.

At wholesale they run about $10. each

This year, I bought some non resistor plugs that Merc recomends as a replacement…for $3.and some change each.

Before I put them in, I wanted to know if anyone has tried them? Can you notice more noise in your radio or anything else? My Lowrance X65 made AM radio pretty much useless. I’m hoping with a new sonar/gps I won’t have that problem.

    Thanks ahead of time!

    Hey Brian.
I also run the non-resistor plugs in my 75 Merc. It definitely makes listening to the Twins on WCCO while trolling a bit challenging!

    Brian,

What are the numbers off of your resistor plugs? Who makes them?

The standard NGK Resistor plug is BUZHW-2 I think the 2 is for 2- expensive.

The NGK non resistor plug is BUHW-2

Cross’en Eyes, My sonar makes it challanging!

Brian, could you run the stereo off a gel battery to reduce interference?

Good question! I am running the radio and the sonar of the same battery. The radio picks up the pings. Although my “un-intelligance” tells me that the noise is coming from the transducer, it’s certainly worth a try. Even a seperate wet cell battery.

I think I’ll try that next week.

This is just a follow up to this old post.

I noticed my Merc running a little ruff…mostly when idling and sort of hard starting. Since I haven’t replaced the plugs in two years..even when stored…I thought it might be time to try my $3.00 ones.

I am amazed! First off I noticed a marked improvment in starting and ideling. There was no noticable differance in radio interferance…AM comes in great unless I use my sonar.

Ever since I first bought this motor, between 4 and 5k rpms, it sounded like I had piston slap…just kind of a rattleing noise in the motor. I thought this noise was just something in the motors design…since it did it from day one…. I’ve been running these $3 non resistor plugs for two weeks now. That noise is completly gone…it was noticeable the first time I took it out.

Wish I would have went with the cheaper plugs a couple years ago!

    Brian,
I’ve got the same motor and have heard the same thing. Changing plugs will handle it?

    I haven’t heard that noise since I’ve changed plugs…and they are…alot cheaper.

That’s all I know. It would be nice to get validation from someone else…let me know! NGK non resistor plug is BUHW-2
