I’d suggest Goodyear Marathon tires, I’ve had good success with them in the past, and will last longer than other brands I’d had to try.
JackNovember 29, 2011 at 3:39 am #1012859Go to http://www.rockymountainatv.com and search for your trailer tire size. I just bought 2 from there awhile back and they are just fine. I believe its a carlise and it will suit you just fine. I have the exact same boat and these tires are just as good a a goodyear for ore than 1/2 the price.
November 29, 2011 at 4:50 am #1012868I would watch out for those carlisle tires there have been recent issues with those tires.you get what you pay for. Ive been using goodyear marathons for years, never any trouble. run at 70mph towing a alumacraft dominator 175 W 150 opti, half the house in toys, suit cases food, and ect, ect, never lost a tire .Just my own experience

Good luck finding any smaller tire that is made in the USA.
November 29, 2011 at 12:39 pm #1012897Stay away from Carlisle. Have many bad stories I can tell. Marathons used to be the best but now they are made in China. Quality has went downhill. Had a 3 yr. old Marathon come apart on the Interstate this year. Lost both fenders on my tandem trailer on 1 side. Tire still had 45lbs. air in it and the tread came off. I put on 4 new Towmax. Have been selling those for 3 years now and have had good luck. I put Marathons on my own at the same time I sold a friend of mine the Towmax and he has had no issues with them.

That is what I found in my research. A good source for unbiased opinion (in my opinion ) are the RV websites. Those guys put on some serious miles. You won’t find many recommendations for GYM there.
I put on a new set of radials from National Tire and Battery this spring. (Thier house brand) One year and about 8k in towing and so far I’m a happy customer.

November 29, 2011 at 1:31 pm #1012913Just remember what is riding on those trailer tires? Do you really want cut rate tires??
November 29, 2011 at 1:34 pm #1012919As long as we’re talking tires…
My 11 year old Marathons need to be replaced.
Could I save the cost of one tire by using my 11 year old spare and put the less worn tire on as the spare?
One dealer suggested that I shouldn’t do that because it’s 11 years old…even though it’s been cover the whole time.Thoughts?

My tires came highly recommended. And not the cheapest option out there either. I believe, based on my personal research that I made the best overall decision. So far, very happy with the tire and service. I suggest each person also do the same.

No. A tire is considered shot after 6 years even with zero miles.

November 29, 2011 at 3:04 pm #1012945Here’s the big problem with tire recommendations. It’s not like a new rod and reel set up. You pretty much know right away if it is junk when you use it the first few times. After a few times out, most can give a pretty good thumbs up or down on that product.
Tires are a different animal. If you get a good set, you really can’t comment on how great they are until it is a how great there were scenario 5 or 6 years down the road. If you have a set you consider junk, other factors must be considered. For instance. They guy who has a physical problem with the trailer or axel. Things like alignment, weight, correct tire sizing and other factors. You can have a guy looking for new tires and have a bent axel. It won’t matter how good the tire he puts on because it will wear out in a year or two and be considered junk. While at the same time another guy with no trailer problems loves that tire! If your current tire is not wearing evenly, make sure to get your trailer fixed first! And in some cases that means getting a completely new trailer. Mostly due to the fact that the overall weight exceeds the trailer or tire limit. Undersized trailers sold new to keep the package prices down are not all that un-common.
Several years ago, I would have agreed with the GYM recommendation. USA GYM were easy to find, priced right and most did not have problems running them. Do some research, many who have the C-GYM are seeing problems. I would not run a Chinese set of GYM’s. Good luck finding a set of GYM made in the USA. If you do, you will want to find the date code. Remember, a set sitting on a shelf for 3 years is 3 years off the tire life.
Go through the process. Do your research. One of the big problems is most places that sell tires (Goodyear included) don’t stock trailer tires. They need to order them in. Ask them to give you the date codes before you order. In some cases it’s like you just asked for their first born! Very frustrating process. Move on.
What I liked about dealing with NTB was first – they stocked the tire I needed. The date codes checked out. The warranty was solid. The RV guys love them. Add that to the fact NTB treated me well, answered all of my stupid questions and had me out the door inside of an hour.
……will re-visit this post in 5 years.

November 29, 2011 at 5:13 pm #1012994Thanks for all the input (jon) I am trying to do the research. Thought I would start Here( beings most of you guys know everything ) Who would have thought buying trailer tires would be so hard ? I should post a pic of my Carlisle tire that has a Big S in it. I have no one local that will have anything I want to buy.
November 29, 2011 at 6:48 pm #1013024These guys were very nice to me and sold me a great set of quad tires. I see they sell trailer tires too. I would look to them as actual experts on this subject.
