Installing a Trolling motor

For those more in tune with boat ‘structural’ stuff, how important is this ‘bumper’? Its really in the way of me installing my new terrova the way I’d like to.

Thanks for any advice, or different options as I’m sure I’m not the first person to have this problem. Discovered this is going to be a way bigger project than I anticipated last night anyway as the re-wiring of the electrical isn’t going to work like I had hoped.

I’m by no means an expert but my quick thought would be that rather then removing the bumper could you just make a quick shim plate underneath the trolling motor mounting plate to get enough height to clear the bumper?

i would not take it off
i would use a peice of treated plywood to level it up

Do not remove that plate!! I would use stainless washers to level it.

MinnKota does make a Shim Plate for the terrova, Its called a backer i belive. If I remember its about 1/4 -5/16 thick. Also, is there a reason you want to hang so far forward? The more bolts you get into it the better. Lastly, you would probly like to use the Quick drop mount for that, it makes removing it a snap. -Mark

Several different options to look at with aftermarket products with MinnKota for the “lip”. check these out.

    trolling motor brackets

Most of these are quick connect which is good if you need to cover your boat or for storage. Basically if you want to take your trolling motor off for any reason. I would highly suggest a lock on those quick disconnects.

Thanks guys, figured there must be stuff out there as I cna’t be the only person to have run into this. I’m going to look at it again tonight with a clearer head, but it seemed if I tried mounting it back farther, I’d either hit the rub rail when deploying, or the head would be sticking out into ‘no mans land’ when its stowed. I had set in on liek the second picture trying to get the best combination of clearance for deploying and keeping the head from sticking outside the rail when stowed.

Looking at the picture now, I also wonder if I remove my bow light plug if I might be able to slide the motor back and get off that plate enitrely, then I just have to find a new home for the bow light plug.

My bow is just like yours. My Terrova is mounted like you want it, with the use of stacked rubber spacers about the size of a 50 cent piece under the part that isn’t on the bow piece. One bolt goes through the bow piece and has no spacers on it. Under tension, the spacers compress a bit and become rock solid. If you want a picture, I can take one, but it will probably just show a terrova mounted to a boat.

You can only go so far back and still allow the motor to deploy correctly.

Think I came up with a better plan. This one keeps it off that plate entirely so no shimming needed. Took the bow light plug out and the anchor mate off and I like how I have it set better now. I’ll just have to re-tap a new hole in front of the motor for the light plug when done. I’m going to leave the anchor mate off for now and just see how much I really need the anchor with the I-pilot. If I still want the anchor mate I can just ‘flip’ it and mount the drop on the other side and the spool to in front of the console.

Haven’t ‘set’ it yet, discovered I’m going to have to pull the front deck up anyway to re-do the wiring so I’m going to get all that out of the way before I run the bolts. Since I’m pulling up the deck I think I’ll get a bigger battery box and replace the existing so I can keep the batteries up front.

Another question for those who have these, the manual talks about having the ‘shaft’ 1 1/2″ away from the rub rail. I’m assuming this measurement is given as to mean the actual shaft, and that 1 1/2″ is so the larger houseing (in picture) will clear, and not that housing is to be 1 1/2″ away (I’d have a heck of a time getting any bolt sin if that were the case). The picture isn’t the best, but there was just about a pinky finger width inbetween the rub rail and that larger diameter housing on the shaft.

Also, with this location I can get the 2 bolts on the farthest forward and farthest back holes on one side, but only on the 2 ‘back’ holes on the other side, will this cause problems? The ‘front’ hole is over the bow, but its so close to the hull that I don’t think I could get a bolt in.

Mine is mounted using 5 bolts. You should be fine.

I have a Terrova on my boat and have not used a anchor since I put it on.

Battery Box, anyone know where to get them without paying an arm and a leg? Not the signle battery box type at any fleet farm or Walmart, the ‘livewell’ type that you mount under the deck of your boat. Figured it would be a common thing but cannot find anything online. Need one just big enough to hold 2 – 27 size batteries, and I cant go much deeper than 10-11″. I pulled out the box that was in the bow last night (only fits 1 battery), so I just need to get a new box, wire it up, and cut a new deck board, carpet and install. I’d like to put a similar plastic ‘tub’ in for the new battery box, I’ll take a picture of it tonight and post to help illustrate. I’m sure they are out there, just having a heck of a time finding them.

New Plan, I am making my own ‘box’. Started last night, I’ll post some progress pictures when I get something to look at. Hopefully I can sneak out of work early to head to my Dad’s to borrow some tools to cut the new deck board. So long as my parts I ordered show up soon I should have this thing ready for water by the end of the weekend.

Still working on the whole install process. I’m taking my camera home with me tonight to get some pictures. FInally started puting things back ‘in’ instead of ripping stuff out on Monday. Now have my new battery ‘box’ built and mounted, new 6ga. wires ran and circut breaker and new onboard charger ‘set’ to be permanently mounted tonight. Also hope to get the new wood deck laid in tonight so I can mark out the new hatch cover and get it cut out so I can carpet the new deck. With any luck I’ll have it done by the weekend.

I’ll try to remember to post pics in case anyone is interested in the ‘progress photos’. I always enjoy seeing them anyway from others projects.
