I unfortunately did something wrong with my motor that is less than a year old and burn up the impeller. I was surfing around looking for articles on impellers and found one site where the person recomended that you replace the impeller on your motor every 2 years regardless of how much use. Any opinions on this?

How often do you seasoned fisherman replace your impellers and do you do it yourself or do you take it some place. I have a Yamaha 90 2 stroke.

I bought my 115 Mercury new in 1997. I just replaced the impeller for the first time last fall. I noticed that the pee stream was not as good as it should be or I wanted it to be. I know that the dealers and companys say you should do it every other year but I think it all depends how much sand and mud you get into as to how fast it wears out and needs replacing.

I think it has much to do with the waters you fish/boat. If dirty, muddy, full of crud, change more often.

I went 4 season on my 115 2-stoke. The blades on the old one were bent over slightly but it still worked.

Can I replace my impeller myself?

The impellers are a pretty simple install that you do do on your own. It helps to have someone hold the lower unit in place when re-installing and lining up the shaft.

I’ve replaced a few impellers before. It’s a piece of cake.

Check your local library for a repair manual, whether it’s chilton’s or some other manual, there will be a chapter on impellor replacement. I needed to look at that before I did it on my old 9.5 Johnson. Getting things apart and the new impellor installed was a snap, but getting the shift lever shaft lined up and reattached was a little tricky. Still, it only took me about an hour. I could do the next one much quicker I’d guess. I would replace mine every 4-5 years at most. Every other is excessive for me as I don’t get out near as much as I’d like. Hope that helps. bret

I did go to the local library. If your a Rochester resident you know how good it is to have a huge library with everything you’d want except James and Dustins video. Oh well that one was worth paying for. Al Linder well I’m glad I didn’t pay anything to watch those.

But back to the impeller. Yup I’m all set thanks guys.
