Out fishing today and I blew the bottom cylinder in my Yammy. Took it to my mechanic today, compression test showed bottom cylinder was out. Not a motor guy so forgive me in advance if I use the wrong terminology. What are my options? remanufactured powerhead, have it rebuilt? No clue? My mechanic, who i think is a good guy said anywhere from $1500-$1800. if I look online, where are some good places to shop for a remanufactured power head?

    Thanks,

    BHS

Sorry to hear about about your bad news, and very surprised.

I would recommend understanding why the cylinder failed first. Bottom carb not working right? Oil related problem to bottom cylinder?

I am saying this because if the power head is replaced or repaired you don’t want this happening again. Good Luck.

I had a power head rebuilt last year on an ’85 merc 115 for $2000. That included boring all 6 cylinders and new over sized pistons. Good luck. It does suck.

Years ago I blew 4 Evinrudes do to carbon build up in the rings from the dyno oil I was using which was Evinrude oil. I switched to Amsoil full synthetic back in 84 and have never had an engine problem since.

The price on the rebuild sounds about right. Could shop around for another motor and sell parts from this one to help compensate for the new motor.

Actually I think oil is part of the problem, the other part being running Either Yamaha’s ring free or I prefer Seafoam myself, every tank of gas to help keep carbon at bay, it seems a little expensive at first, but not when you look at it the long run.

I’ve run YamaLube < Amsoil < Pennzoil semisynthetic/full synthetic I can say my motor runs as good, and the reccomendation came from a trusted motor builder, who also specifically does not like Amsoil. IIRC He likes Merc. oil and Pennzoil.

I can also say carbon wise, even running Seafoam or Ringfree in every tank, my prop is cleaner and darn near carbon free, which I never witnessed with Yamalube or Amsoil.

Also though not a big factor, but a nice one, Pennzoil semi is really reasonable at Walmart, probably half the price of Amsoil.

Online I’ve seen a lot of motors blow with Yamalube, now it’s hard to pin that directly on Yamalube for lots of reasons, but can’t recall a Yamaha motor blown with Pennzoil, I’m sure there are some, at very least something to think about.

As with any oil thread your thoughts and feelings may differ, but it wasn’t a decision that I made lightly, and spent way more time reading up on stuff than I care to admit to.

I also spent a lot of time reading up on saltwater motor forum’s and it gets a big thumbs up from the people I could find, and those guys put some major hours on their boats and motor.
