On my new Mercury 90HP 2 stroke the dealer had me add a few quarts to the tank and fill up the oil res. of course. Said to run it that way the first tank and then run it with just the oil res. the second tank.

    Ditto.

Vary the rpms but don’t open it up for at least 10 gallons. Then don’t hold it there for an extended period.

I usually break in with at least 24 gallons of gas before I put the coals to her.

Those with Opti’s consult your manual. According to the best Merc Tech on this planet, the biggest reason the opti’s had trouble on the circuits was due to improper break in procedures. They can be hooked up to the computer to show the history. If the break in was incorrect they might not stand behind the warranty.

I have never seen the manual for the break in but I will in few weeks when I get my new 193 Warrior with a 225 Merc Opti!!!!

I would go with your dealer recommendations for your brand of motor so you do not void your warranty.

What does your owners manual say?

You need a manual. One for mine is something like, idling for a period of hours, variable part throttle for hours, then small bursts of full speed for hours! I think it was with extra oil but not sure of that. I can’t remember the details.

Not sure about the other brands but Suzuki has step by step instructions for this. I followed it to the letter.

    Wade,
I’ve got the same motor and did the same thing. It was pretty easy. Motor runs great now going on it’s third year in the water.

Everything I have heard about breaking in a motor was follow the owners manual to the letter. That came from several different sources when I purchased my new boat/motor 2 years ago.
