Every time a post of this type is put up you will find half your replies are from guys that love them and the other half hate them. With that said take it all for what its worth. I had a 07 e-tec 115 and didn’t have very good luck with it. I sold it in 09 with 86hrs on it and was happier to see it go then i was to see it come home. I don’t recommend them but I’m sure the next poster will say other. Every make has or had it problems and there is always someone not happy with something.
yep herd the same stuff about the bigger motors. Dont know if they have it figured out. I have a 2004 40hp with nearly 700 hours…no problems
Dont spend the money. The best thing about the E tech is the warranty. From what I have been threw its a good thing because it will be used over and over again.
You will have better hole shot with the e tech over a 4 stroke. My 75 hp yamaha has better top end speed but only by maybe 1 MPH.
Noise of the motor was very close for both.
The tiller arm and VTS button on the yamaha was far better than the E tech. Much more user friendly. I think Merc has a similar tiller arm now that looks identical to the yamaha.
My e tech just flat out would not start in cold weather. New batteries, 3 new starters, trip after trip to the shop and they never could figure it out. Baught the yamaha 3 years ago and haven’t had a problem since.
My E tech was a 04 75hp. You would hope they got the kinks worked out of them by now but I still hear of guys with newer models having the same problems. Even if the E tech worked perfectly I still think the Yamaha is a much more user friendly motor.
http://www.etecownersgroup.com/ A lot of help on that site.
I’ve done a lot of reading and asked a lot of questions on the 60hp and found very little if any bad that could not be fixed. Planning to get the 60 tiller myself but want to wait till Evinrude comes out with the VTS control for the 40-50and 60hp.
My youngest has had a 90hp for 4 years now that hasn’t given a lick of trouble.

Talk to Dean Marshall. Overall they seemed like good motors but his little fleet of Etecs on the rental boats had issues running in the cold. As in start it up, warm it up… put it up on plane…. loss of power. Head back to the dock with motor in some kind of limp mode. It was such a consistent issue that he stopped renting them in the winter as remapping them and switching to XD100 oil did not solve the issues.
Jesse,
If you would like to run a Yamaha 60 tiller let me know. I re-powered my 16ft Crestliner in 2009 with the Yamaha and love it. I am located south of Hastings.

Thank you for the replies everyone. After getting more negative than positive reviews I decided to just get my lower fixed and be able to run in the winter. Nothing wrong with the Merc, it has a brand new power head and now will have a brand new rebuilt lower unit.
I did turn down the deal of a lifetime. I could have picked up a brand spanking new 2011 E-Tec 60 hp for $4350 rigged with my ’97 60 hp Merc as trade
Oh well now I know why they are selling so cheap
