I have a 50hp mercury elpto, it is a year 2000, what happens is I put it in the water, run to a few spots and fish, usally run time is 15 minutes, then when I come back to the ramp it is about a 20 minute run. my partner backs the trailer in the water and as I am idleing my alarm starts sounding, not for sure if it is for oil or cooling, I then rev it up a bit in neutral and the alarm goes off. this has happened consistenly the last 4 times out. including last year, I am really stumped, any ideas would be appricated, else I will take it to a dealership, but I dont know if they will be able to repeat the situation or not. Grateful for any info.. please PM me

if it’s oil injected and the res. is full then i’d bet your water pump impeller is going out…Better have that one checked out…I have a 2002 Merc 50 ELPTO…

ecnook, the water spout that comes out the back of the engine is in full force, and the water is cool. anything else that I am not looking at that I should be.

    thanks

You might just have a bad alarm…….have it tested.

Have you checked your oil level? If you are low (not empty) and you tilt your motor up, the oil dosen’t flow enough. When you “rev your engine” your motor falls back to a minimum trim mode (safety feature so you don’t run your motor hard while out of the water with no water pump) thus leveling out the oil and allowing the pump to work again. Just a guess and I am sure you have already checked it but it never hurts to point oout the simple things first!

Sounds similar to what happened to my 50hp merc. Some seal in the water pump housing was worn that caused low water pressure at idle spead. It didn’t pump enough water to keep the engine cooled. After the fix the amount of water coming out the hole was much greater. The mechanic said it was a fairly commmon problem. As already stated, there could be other reasons, best to get it checked out soon.

I’m with labman. I have the same motor, and the “Low Oil” alarm on mine is very sensitive. I can have at leat 1/3 of a tank of oil, but if the tilt on the motor is high enough, she’ll beep. Other than this, the best advice I can give you is to get a new motor……

To all those with helpful advice,
Thank you very much, I ended up replacing the water pump, and that took care of it. I thought it was strange because I seem to have good pressure and a good idoit stream coming out the back of the motor, I guess it is good to know the censors working, thank you again for all your insight.
