I am new to the whole kicker thing. I have a 98 fishhawk 1750 with a 90 merc. I have a mid ’80’s 15hp johnson sitting around. What do I need to do to use this as a kicker. Is it even possible? Thanks in advance!!

1st you need to determine what shaft length you have on your motor vs. your transom. I think I’m correct in saying that you should have a kicker motor with a 20″ shaft. Anything shorter wouldn’t clear the bottom of the hull and you would have thrust and boat control problems.
Your Merc 90 is Oil injected. Since you run straight gas in your boat, you will need a separate tank for your 15 horse because it burns pre-mix. As long as you have a spot for a small external tank, no problem. I know alot of guys who have 2 stroke kickers and run from a seperate gas tank.

    Good Luck!

I am pretty sure the motor I have is a long shaft, so that should work. Do I need a special plate to mount the motor? Or can I just mount it right to the transom?

You can do either. I have an alumacraft TP175 and I have mine bolted to the transom, no plate. It works fine. I know a lot of guys that have attached plates so you can adjust the height of the motor easier tilt the motor easier.
