Trailer light problem

Hello. Brand spanking new here and hope this is in the proper sub-forum.

This is a question for my step-dad, he isn’t forum savvy at all so here I am.

He just got a 2012 Ford f150 and the lights on his boat trailer do not work. No break lights, no tail lights, no turn signals, nothing. Hiss previous truck was an early 2000’s Chevy and his son has it now. The son brought the Chevy back over, hooked it up and the lights work fine. Dad took the F150 back to the dealer and they tested the connector and it’s generating power. So they don’t know what’s going on either.

Has anything like this happened to anyone else here? And if so do you have any tips to pass along so we can fix it? Maybe a different adapter or something?

Sorry that was long winded and thank you very much in advance.

It has to be something in the new truck or the adapter that it’s using. Did the adapter come with the truck or is it one you purchased? If it’s not with the truck, I would try a new one. If it’s what came with the truck I would have the dealer fix it. If the lights work connected to the old truck and not the new truck, it’s not the trailer, it’s the truck.

Since you say there is power at the connector on the Ford, and the lights work with the Chevy hooked up, just for chits and giggles run a ground strap with alligator clips from the Ford hitch to the trailer and plug in the lights. Make sure the clips are making good contact.
    Just a process of elimination.

Thanks for the quick responses. I’m heading over there tomorrow and will try the ground and adapter.

    Thanks again!

Should have got another Chevy then your trailer lights would still be working ! Sorry, I’m partial to Chevys.

I had the same problem with my lights no ground. I ran a jumper to the truck fixed it.
