Anybody know if a power trim and tilt assembly from a 1996 40 hp evinrude would work on a 1992 johnson 40 hp? Since they (johnson/Evinrude) are virtually the same thing I’d think it would just be compatibility across the year models. I don’t know the part number on the 96 part, from what I read online at lunch they ought to be interchangable, but wanted to see if anyone here knew for sure (without part # i know its more difficult). The outboard I have is a TJ40ELENM, just has the lift assist cylinder now thats going bad. I’d like to put a bigger motor onthe boat but there’s no garuntee I’ll have the funds in the near future for that and there is a possibilty I might be able to pick up this tilt assembly for a real good price, but want to be sure it will fit first as test fitting and or returning won’t be an option.

Controls are set of a power trim system so I’d think it should just be a matter of installing it and hooking the controls up?

It doesn’t look like it from the Evinrude website. They have a parts lookup feature. You would need the model of the 1996 motor, or the part number off the T&T unit..to be sure. Otherwise, call a local dealer, they should be able to tell you if it would work. Sorry, I don’t have those books any longer..

Did a little more digging, my shop manual wasn’t much help but its just one of the Clymer books that covers more broad terms than specifics. I looked up the part numbers for the power T&T systems for my 92 and came up with 0435531 or 0397532. Went on marineengine.com and it states there that both those part numbers were replaced by number 0438135, which is the only part number I could find for a T&T system for a 96.
I’ve got a message in to find out the part # and/or model # of the motor its coming off of, so that should help. A bit hesitant going to a dealer after my last experience going of a wild goose chase for 3 months trying to find the 100 dollar part I was told I needed (and was on factory backorder) only to spend about an hour online to find out that part number had been replaced by a different # and was $30.
Looked at some of the other part I’d need (electrical, guages.switches etc.), wont be as slam dunk a deal as I thought, but still a lot cheaper than what replacing the tilt assist cylinder would be and I get the benifit of Power T&T.
