another reason I am starting to love my i-pilot

To preface this, I’ve been a cable steer guy for as long as I’ve had boats. It was hard for me to make the switch, but the spot lock feature on the river was the final selling point. Now that I’ve had it for a few months, I keep finding new to me ways to use it. People with power drive motors will probably read this and go, DUH, of course that’s a good use for it.

I was pulling lead core in a fairly stiff breeze yesterday and was having a heck of a time keeping the bow from blowing all over while steering with the kicker. As I looked down at the i-pilot remote still hanging around my neck from pulling crawlers, it dawned on me why I see people trolling with their bow mount down. I turned that on to help keep the bow pointed straight and it made life much easier. Then I tried using the auto pilot so I didn’t have to steer at all, just make corrections. AND THEN, I thought, “Hey, why not just record a track right along the channel edge and let the bow mount do all the work”.

And THAT, was my i-pilot AHA moment of the weekend. I was able to follow right along the top of the break without ever having to watch my GPS and pay attention to when I needed to turn. It was a little hurky jerky on the corrections at times, but with the kicker providing the straight line thrust, it worked pretty well.

You beat me to it, that’s exactly what I have been wanting to try. Now if only I could link that to my graph and/or lake chip and have it follow a certain depth life would be perfect….almost.

My new boat has a cable steer motor on it and I have to say I hate the stupid thing. I can’t believe people actually use these things. A nice I-pilot may be in my future

I just wish you could have the option of using your wireless remote or the foot pedal.

Or once you have had the wireless would you ever want to use the pedal again ??

I use both all the time. The remote to use the ipilot features and the foot peddle for steering when I am in that end of the boat. If not I steer with the remote.

I beleive Iron Headr was refering to the Pd not the terrova where its either one way or another on both although I have heard you can hotwire it and use both some how. I cant wait for my terrova!! Speed control with the Ipilot is also second to none, my kickers throttle is hard to dial in sometimes and the i pilot fixs that by allowing me to dial in to the specific .whatever of a mph.

    Ahem, Dom? ….

Couldnt agree more John, comes in darn handy when you are by yourself in the boat dealing with a fish, retying, etc.

I cannot wait to get one of these next year for the post spawn 3-way bite on Pool 4.

I think not having the valuable “spot lock” this year costed me a little more in tournament $$$ than it wouldof costed to mount one on the bow at the start of the year.

I won’t make that mistake next year and am excited to put one of these to the test!

Great use of the iPilot! The more we explore, the more we love it.

I actually tried using my son’s cable motor last month and thought what a waste. My iPilot does all this for me so I can fish. In fact, I don’t even sit up front anymore. I run the boat from behind the windshield…… Cuz I can.

Question for the other i-Pilot users…

Is this common? I’m on my first year with the i-Pilot and haven’t had it out much. I find myself using the compass autopilot instead of GPS because it seems to zig zag and overcorrect across the invisible line using the GPS. The couple of times I tried the track playback it seemed to do the same. It might be because I have a midsize aluminum boat with an overpowered trolling motor, but conventional wisdom has been that you cannot go too big on the trolling motor.

Exactly how I felt when I bought my boat a few years back, nice motor, but not for me, couldn’t wait to get rid of it.

    As I see it…
Cable drive = for moving your boat
Powerdrive/terrova = holding and fishing specific spots and moving the boat…
