Anyone have any recommendations for infant life jackets? Specifically 0-3 months or 3-6 months. Our older two boys were born in the fall, so we really never had a need for one this small. We leave in a few weeks for our vacation and I want to make sure I have one by then.

    Thanks,

    Short story:
    Stohlquist Nemo Infant PFD

    Long story:
I just went through the shopping process with our 8 month old twins. The challenge is all infant PFD’s are very restrictive and all coast guard approved designs are for up to 30 pounds. There’s a big size difference between your 6 month old now and a 30# baby. We bought and tried a couple of different brands and as soon as you put the baby on your lap it pushes too far up on their neck and head and they hate it. I finally searched out one with a more v neck style and bought the Stohlquist Nemo online. It was the first one they did not fuss after having to wear it. Tbe best price I found was at o2gearshop.com but I had to buy 2 and thus spent enough for free shipping. It shipped fast and came from WI. If you buy this google a coupon code. The specs say type III but I just checked again and it is type II.

We have a 3 month old. He uses a Neoprene one that won’t be too hot. We obviously still try to keep him out of the sun. He doesn’t like wearing it because he has to be held and it is restrictive, but he does ok.

In my own experience, neoprene life jackets hold in a lot of heat. Not a big deal if you’re in and out of the water a lot, but I do think they’re hot. For me, the comfort outweighs the heat retention, but then again I am only wearing one while skiing and on PWCs.

My daughter is a NICU (NeoNatal Intensive Care Unit) RN at a Children’s Hospital and they love boating, her daughter was born in February 5-weeks early. Now, at 4-months she is 13lbs so daughter did research and most documents say a Infant should not be in a Life Jacket or Boating until they can sit up by themselves.
They also advise testing them with your child in a pool to make sure they will right themselves if the Worst Case happens.

Yes, she wants to be on the water and so do I, but nothing is worth chancing when it comes to the life of your Child/in my case Grandchild.

    Good Luck and stay SAFE!

Was looking for a vest a few weeks back after research ended up getting this one from bps. My daughter is 15lbs and the fit is great with room to grow.

I agree. Nothing good can happen if there is a accident in a boat with a baby. Save everybody the mental anguish and keep the baby on shore. It might be tough on the adults now but noting compared to if something terrible were to happen on the water.

Word – 3 kids and none saw the boat until they were a bit older.

It doesn’t have to be all or nothing. Our maiden trip with the twins was to square lake on a Saturday at 4pm. There is a lakewide no wake restriction at this time. We just cruised around for a short trip with the trolling motor and anchored up. A sheriff launched at 4pm and any yahoos who went above idle got an immediate visit. It doesn’t get much safer than that.

There is an assumed risk everytime I take them for a car ride, a walk, or even introducing new foods. It’s all about managing that risk to an acceptable level.
