Help! Evinrude 40hp Problems…

Need some help diagnosing a outboard issue…. I just put a 2000 Evinrude 40hp on my 16′ Alumacraft.

    Some things to note:
The previous owner had the oil injection system removed, so gas is premixed.
When I removed the motor from the boat, I just cut the 2 wires going to the oiltank.
So, yesterday, I drop it in the river for it’s first run. Starts great. let it warm up, still purring away. I take off. It’s running great, WOT for about 20 seconds then starts slowing down, until it slows down to near a crawl. a little more than idle, but enough to plow my way back up river back to the launch. If I let it idle for a few seconds, then hit the throttle, it’s full power again for a few seconds, then cuts down again. Thoughts???

Any idea why they would remove the oil injection system? It was very nice not having to mix oil on that motor. I seem to remember a safety feature on that motor would drop the rpms to a low level if over heating or maybe lake of oil.

sounds like vapor lock is the tank vent open or clogged?

I don’t know why he had it removed, claimed he was advised to. Same old VRO story I’m sure. It’s supposed to have everything there to reinstall.

Gas tank is a metal style. I just put a new OMC gas line on, as the original was cracked.

The Smartgauges are showing “low oil” and “Water temp warning” which I think is normal which the oil system is removed?

    Nope..that’s not normal….

I had mine removed for money reasons ($450 new pump VS $75 )and still have my water temp alarm and light working normally …

I think they bypass the oil warning system

What shape is the brass connector on the tank in??

    For what it’s worth

Maybe I need the oil tank mounted in the boat, just to have the wires hooked up to eliminate the “low oil light” ?

Shape of which brass? on which tank?

    Thanks,

My oil tank was removed ….Even though I watch the whole operation I’m not sure what he did but I’m pretty sure it’s how the wiring was rearranged

I would ask someone who does these conversions ….

As for the brass,I didn’t notice you had a metal gas tank….I was referring to where you plug the fuel hose into the tank.

It might be different than my plastic one…

    Good luck guy

Maybe the two wires still need to be there even though the oil tank is not being used. Motors will drop to low rpms when low on oil or overheating.

Thanks for all of the replies…
I’m going to put the oil tank back in today, and wire it back up. See if that does the trick. Keep you posted.
