Looking at a couple of Shimano rods for potential Leadcore set-ups for pulling cranks for Eyes. I don’t want a debate to start about preferred length as I will be getting something between 7′ and 8’3″ (my own preference). The question I have is surrounding the best size for that length of rod (M vs. MH). I am looking at either the Compre or Talora models. I don’t want to spend much more than $120 on the rod. Any suggestions? Thanks Again.

I have been using my Shimano Compre 7″ medium action for leadcore for a couple seasons and its been a great rod.It handles the leadcore and crankbaits or harnesses good and have not had any issues with it.I have a Shimano lC-1500- (no longer made)with 17lb Cortland on it. I got mine from Tackle Direct and back then they were cheaper than other places had them.Good luck in your choice.

I know you may not be interested in this because it’s not Shimano, but you might look at the ‘shorties’ that lots of guys, including myself, are using. The 5′ Peregrines sure are fun to catch fish on. I have some different 5 footers, and they work well also.

    Medium Heavy all the way.

I personally would look at the Limit Creek Trolling Rods. You can get 5′, an 8’6″ or a 12′ rod. Check them out, they are below your price range.

I’m looking at a pair of new 8’3” compre rods standing in the corner.Paired with Takota 500lc.Waiting for the river to clean up a little.Hope to get them out next week.Look to be a sweet setup.Think $120 is about the average price.Liked Compre quite a bit better than Tolara. Also Shimano rep. recommendation.

Thank you all for the input. Steveno, did you go with M or MH for the compre? I have a 6’6″ Compre ML with a Symmetre 750 and it is my favorite rod so I definitely look hard at the Compre series for a trolling rod. With a MH, is there a light enough tip to sense if the rap is running true? That and is there enough give for the eye to get a good bite on it? Thanks Again

Check the classifieds here on IDO. I know there are a couple Talora leadcore rods for sale.

CPC-TR83MB medium power, medium fast action.I like that it will telescope down to fit in rod locker. My last 8-6 rods didn’t,what a pain in the The rep that recommended these rods has been dead on with his choices. If you put a Takota on it the 500 fits perfect.600 will hold most of a 100 yard spool of 18# but is pretty bulky.

What were the differences that you noticed?

I have a Compre for long lining cranks and am currently in the boat as the OB looking for a 7.5-8.5′ lead core rod. I see that Shimano has a “lead core” rod in the Talora series. I’m curious as to what the difference is between that and the Compre.

At this point I am leaning towards the Jason Mitchell JMST80MF based on Jason Halfens lead core article which stated “Next, I have a pair of 8 foot, telescoping Jason Mitchell trolling rods (JMST80MF), which feature a very sensitive tip section and do an outstanding job of telegraphing bait action.”

As the OP mentioned, I am also look for a rod with a sensitive tip that will telegraph the bait action.

I picked up 2 combos last year used from a guy . The rods are D862MI 8′ 6″ DAIWA and got 5 colors on the sealines and they seem to have worked out great , they have a nice limber tip on them to watch the action of the bait to detect when weeds are present . Good luck fishing.

When looking at reels, how big of a reel would I need to make sure I fit 10 colors of 18lb on it. In other words, what does it correspond to in “normal” line, e.g. 510/20, 280/25 etc. I am looking at Sealines and the Cabelas DM Gold (I like the left hand availability)

Thanks again for the info. If I go with the Cabelas DM Gold, would it be wiser to try to cram 10 colors on a 20 series (will it even fit?) or go with the 30 series? The 30 series appears to be bigger yet then the Sealine 47. Thanks Again

I’m not sure 10 colors will fit on a 20. I would go with the 30 to be sure. Be sure to check the price on line. Many times they are cheaper than at the store. The store will give sell it for the online price. I bought a planer board rod and 30 combo for $49.95 on line price at the store.

I ordered the Depthmaster 30L for $25 off and Compre 8’3″ M MF with a $20 rebate on the Compre. Thanks again for all the help. For those who have a Depthmaster 30 series, how much backing do I need to put on before 10 colors of 18lb test? Thanks again for all of the help.
