Is a Mercury outboard labled 18XD a long shaft designation? Obviously the 18 states the power output but what does the “XD” stand for?

I think it may be roman numerals for the number of times you can expect it to be in the shop.

Funny… But we strive to be helpful first and foremost. Anyone have the answer?

I tried but all I can find about that motor is that it’s a 50:1 fuel mixture and manufactured in 80-85.

Found this on another site, not much help though

-XD indicates EXTRA DUTY and we are really not sure what they mean by that.

    Exactly!
From the parts site I looked at, it was available in both short and long shaft. It appears to be a de-tuned 20-25, kind of like the XS and HO motors of today.
So no, it does not indicate shaft length.

I’ve always wondered why my dad’s Merc 9.8 HP is called a 110. Who knows what went into their model designations!

I guess I need to apologize to those who were offended by my crack on Mercury. The one I owned was the biggest POS ever to come out of their plant. Some people have good luck with them. It was a joke and I assumed that would have been obvious.

I’m not offended. Just ribbing you for your Yamaha infatuation.

    eXtra Durable.They had a beefed-up gearcase,plus a larger waterpump impeller.Overall,a real nice motor.Very portable for a 25HP.
