Every time I go to use the trailer plug on my truck to tow boat or other trailers I have to get a very small wire brush and try to get the green stuff out of the little holes to get a good connection. Is there anything ( grease, WD-40 ) or what ever to stop this?

They make an electical type grease but i just use a dab of regular bearing grease that works just fine.

You can get battery terminal cleaner, other wise baking soda and water do the same thing. Clean the terminals really good with what ever you prefer, and then get a tube of dielectric grease, which can be purchased at any auto store. That will last a long time, trouble free.

I like to put a bit of bearing grease on the connectors every 4-5 trips. Seems to take care of the issue.

Dielectric grease will help prevent the corrossion but it is tacky so it may attract debris when the harness is not plugged. The grease is available almost everywhere like auto stores, walmart, etc.

WD will work to clean the plug out and protect it for a little while. If you go to your local parts store there is a product that people use on batt. posts and stuff to keep out corotion.I sorry I cant think of the name.I use it at work on the pigtail between my tractor and trailer, works great even thru the winter.

For the BEST results .. I would replace the the plug in.

The reason it corrodes is that you can NOT get all the corrosion out when cleaning and it just spreads with time.

If you use “dielectric” grease it will last for years to come, when replacing the plugin I would solder and heat shrink the connections to insure a tight and corrosion free connection.

Aslo, inspect the vehicle for a GOOD ground circuit, most corrosions starts there (poor grounds), and repack connections occasionally on vehicle and trailer with dielectric grease.

You can also buy protective rubber covers for the connectors ends.

Fishing time is getting harder and harder to come by these days ,why waste it with poor maintenance..

Get a can like this link

I think I got mine at NAPA. I’ve had it for years. If nothing else, it works great for battery terminals. Will it work in the plug? I’ll find out. I just had to put a new plug on and it came with a cover. If only the old one had.
