    I am considering buying an engine, 94 Johnson 115, with compression problems.

    I know little about engines so before I would buy, who should I have check it out??

    I don’t think it is a cracked head and i belive that the crank shaft is ok.

    Also, if it is a valve, rods or rings what are the approximate costs of fixing each??

    PS. Got any names and numbers of those who can do quality engine work in the Winona, Lacrosse or vacinity?

    Thanks

    You didn’t give any specifics on the motor, so it’s kind of hard to check prices, but, this link should help you with price checks. Master Tech Boat Repair

    Jeff;

    Unless the motor is absolutely DIRT CHEAP. I would recommend staying away from it. The reason for my comment is, that something wrong happened to it and the history could be a little shakey and there could be reliability problems down the road.

    Good luck!

    I have had some experience with repairs on OMC motors. Lack of compression will most likely be either a broken or stuck ring. A rebuild will be no less than $2000 at a marine shop.
    If you would like more details of the issues I faced , email me a phone number to contact you with. I would never do a rebuild again. Sorry for the less than positive opinion.

    haywood, that’s the one problem that you don’t want in a used motor. There’s only one way to get it fixed and that’s complete teardown and rebuild. At a bare minimum you could fix it with new rings and some honing, at least that’s how I see it. Screwups might cost more than the parts you need.
