For all you rock runners out there! Looking to get a skeg protector for my 225 optimax pro XS. There are many options, looking for input on which one to go with. Thanks, Joe

    Great topic Joe.

The Mn river is very tough on my skeg most years.

maybe I should not try and fish in shallow rocky water.

I saw a stainless one that slipped over your standard Alum skeg. I guess that would help some.

I just keep my motor tilted and my bow mount down when running in rocks. Figure the bow mount will bottom out before the main motor’s skeg.

Now if you are talking about “running ” with speed in the rocks………. Give Justin a call. Get your insurance on the lower unit increased.

I have one on my motor. I think it’s made by “Skeggard”. I’m surprised how well it works. And it sticks a bit lower than the skeg so it helps protect the prop. High speed, though…I’d imagine you’d be f’ed.

Not looking for high speed protection that is what insurance is for! Need something to have protection from the dings (rocks) and scratches (sand) that goes with everyday use.

Well, then, a Skeggard should do nicely. Mine is in great shape, and I am fairly rough on it. And it was on there when I bought it (3 years ago), so I have no idea how old it is.

Good to hear Ryan. I have been looking at the Skegguard and since you believe she works well, good enough for me.

Joe, it’s called trim and tilt.
