Removing Boat Scratches

  • #1238416

    Hey guys,

I have a few surface scratches that I would like to try and buff out, and I would also like to restore some of the shine as well, since the black color has got a little dull over the past few years. Any ideas?

You could try rubbing compound, but I would do it in a spot you can’t see very well first. I have a black boat as well and have given up. The rubbing compound did ok on very shallow surface stuff, but not on heavy stuff. I have found water scum to cover the scratches very well.

Couple things to talk about, i’ve owned many glass boats, best way to keep a fiberglass boat shining is wipe it off every time you take it out of the water….but 1st at least once a year buy a bottle of lime-away mix it as instructions say into 5 gallons of water & give your boat a bath a section at a time & rinse with plenty of fresh water & sponge what this does is remove all the hard water spots & strip off all the old wax!! hand dry with clean towels! Buy yourself some good fiberglass wax! If thats doesn’t take care of your scratches!! Use POLISHING COMPOUND only, & wax again over those spots as compounds take wax off of finish as well!! Hope this helps!! I think you’ll like the way it looks if you do this!!

Justin I have a lund boat. What I use is an oxidizer along with my electric buffer. I will take all the old dull paint look out then I put on Meguliars wax after that. Its in a black bottle. It works very good you will notice also the scratches are basicially disappeared. I use it on mine. My boat is dark blue plus I keep mine in a marina. I also wax the bottom helps me easier cleaning the hull off in the fall. Hope I helped you out.

Be careful a lot of the newer boats have very little paint.New painting processes allow them to paint so thin it is semitransparant.I repaired a damaged lund that you could see the aluminum thru the paint. What can appear to be fade can a dirt film.First clean it very well.If you do any buffing use a orbital buffer and polish with little or no abrasive. Also beware of graphics. Some the color is in them, and some are on the surface. The latter won’t take much polishing till you see plain white surface.

    Look at http://www.larsensales.com

I have been using this for 3 years and it is great. I use the wonderfoam and the restore boat polish. The wonderfoam once or twice a year and the restore polish after taking it out of the lake. I have a black lund and I now exactly what you are talking about. I just cleaned my boat and it is like a mirror. It is a 1700 Explorer and it took me about 45 minutes to clean the whole thing. I would suggest contacting larsensales and telling them what you are planning to do, he will call you back and explain the whole process, or I can too if you want more details. It is 11.90 for each of the 2 products I mentioned. I have been using it for 3 years and am still using the same bottles. You will be amazed how well this works.

I have used Simple Green in full strength in a spray pump bottle, mist on the surface and wipe using clean towels. Keep clean towels going this is a must! Otherwise it is like reaplying old residue into itself!!

You will be pleasantly supprised with the results on the towel that you are using. You might think that there would be no paint left on your vehicle with the color that transfers on to the towel!!

Complete this to the whole vehicle and follow with your favorite wax. You will find that the wax process is like the first time doing it off the showroom floor. Soo nice and easy! That is a deep clean and no rubbing compound!!

Hopes this helps Justin, I tried it on our mini motor home and could not believe the difference it did for me the first time I tried it! Cut my waxing time by more than 1/2 and nearly only had to wax once a year rather than twice.

If you don’t believe me try a small area in a few square feet and do the simple process. What are you going to be out in doing so, a bottle of simple green??
