Long story short, I’ll find out tomorrow if the engine in my Tahoe is toast. I’m pretty sure I know the answer.

Can anyone recommend a shop in the cities that specializes in engine replacement? Not looking for a hole in the wall or backyard mechanic. It’s a nice truck, and I want it done well and promptly.

Yikes! Sound expensive. Good luck I hope it doesn’t cost you too much. I can recommend a terrific mechanic who is honest and reasonably priced up by you in Osseo. Ive been going to him for years. Never had to do a full engine replacement though.

My guys place is called J L Auto if you want to check him out. His shop is right by fleet farm in BP/osseo. He’s a Chevy guy but fixes all manner of cars. If he isn’t up to the task I’m sure he would be willing to recommend a person for you.

I’ve used him before, on your recommendation, I believe. I may give him a call.

My old friend from elementary (Noble) and his dad own a shop in new hope. Trustworthy and worth a call, not sure if they do swaps but they would know who does. Kurths auto repair.

Sorry to hear about the truck. That no oil light turn into something more here? My 6.2 did it to me one day pulling the boat after you posted, never did again but always been on back of mind.

    2012 with the 5.3.

Ralph, I was just wondering if you had an idea if the issue was the heads or in the block.

    Kurths auto repair.

It’s sitting there now. Didn’t sound like they would do a swap there, though.

Not to bring up a sore subject, Ralph, but what happened?

It’s a bummer, I’ve been there before too. I feel for you. Nothing brightens your day/week like having an engine or tranny cr@p the bed. I thought those Tahoe 5.3 motors were good motors, but bad stuff still happens to good motors.

I feel your mechanical pain, brother. Internet bro-hug.

That sucks to hear, I’m sorry. I know of a guy in the south metro if you’re interested…I had a buddy go through 2 AFM 5.3’s in his Silverado in just a few years, but they were dealer installed under warranty…That AFM in the first few years has seemed to almost always be the death of em.

Nothing catastrophic. Was running A-OK. Went to the store the other night, and all of a sudden, it started clattering very loudly. Sounds like a lifter got stuck and is causing some havoc. More to come.

Yeah, I have a BIL that lost one a few years ago, too. This was my first GM and will be my last GM. Just hit 100K last week.

Sorry to hear that Ralph. The tranny in my 2006 Sierra just took a dump on Monday coming home from work with no warning as well, really blew my budget for the house repairs this year. Hope it works out for you.

That really sucks. One of the most successful engine platforms out there and you got a bad one, maybe a couple extra drinks are in order for this weekend.

Yep. MIL just bought a new pontoon, so I’ll be lounging on the lake. Gonna be a tight ride to the lake in the Mazda 6 with the wife, 2 kids, and 90-lb dog, though!

2002 Silverado with the 5.3 at 180K miles and still going strong. And my story is far from unique. I hope you don’t write off GM forever. I think you just had some bad luck.

I had the good fortune of replacing the 5.3L engine in my 2007 Suburban… I blocked the Active Fuel Management on it as soon as I bought it, but evidently it was too late…

I’d written them off till 2 years ago, and I’m writing them off again. Sorry, GM, but I should have followed my gut.

Sorry to here Ralph. I’ve had 3 5.3’s over the last 10 years and never had one issue but I know where your coming from and don’t blame you as I would be thinking long and hard if I had your track record with GM. I’m not sure it helped but on my last two (2012/2106) I deleted the AFM right after the warranty period was up. I was pleasantly surprised when I saw that my MPG’s hardly wavered after doing this and the acceleration lag was almost totally gone.

If you’re still looking JC Auto in Rogers does engine swaps. They swapped my a motor in my sisters car, mazda 6 with 50K junkyard motor for like 4,800. I realize that’s a little different than a Tahoe but just letting you know.

FWIW, I had a 2006 (Non-AFM) motor go on me @150-160k. I was BURNING 1-2 quarts every tank of gas. Did it for about 3 fill-ups before I sold it to someone who was convinced it was rings…It had a crate motor thrown in shortly after…

I plan on going back to GM after this Ford of mine dies…

Junkyard motor should be arriving today and getting installed this week. Now, I start looking for its replacement.
