Engine slip or something ??

Hello all I’m new here and new to boats. I got an 89 Skeeter with a 130 Yamaha about two months ago. I have had it on the lake several times and it has performed well seems to have plenty of power and accelerates well. The last time I had it out when I would throttle up it seemed like it would start well but then it seemed to loose forward power and just start revving up high rpm. Has anyone experienced this any ideas or input would be appreciated. Thanks

It’s possible that you spun your prop. It’s happened to me.

X2 you will need take the prop in and have a new hub pressed in, then you will be back to 100%

Never heard that before I always thought a prop was solid but that definitely sounds reasonable. I will research that I just thought a prop was a solid object. Thank you very much for your input. Dave

There’s a rubber/plastic sleeve in the prop that can slip.

So if you smack a rock with the prop, hopefully the prop hub will spin and your prop shaft won’t bend or break, or your lower unit bearings or gearing won’t be damaged.

When this happens, will it be obvious by looking at the rubber center? I felt like mine was having this issue under harder acceleration at the end of last year, but couldn’t see anything wrong with the prop center.

Sounds like cavitation (Air bubbles in the prop). Just back off on the throttle for a second or two and then try again.

Were you trimmed up to far?

One way to check if it is a spun hub is to draw a line across the prop and hub where the two meet. Take the boat out to replicate the problem, and if your hub is slipping, the line will not match up afterward running the boat.

No, it will not be obvious. In most cases it takes a tremendous amount of torque to start slipping, so there is no easy way to “see” the problem.

This ^^^^ is the correct and easiest way to diagnose the problem.

On my way to the lake to try this right now. Thanks

Did you get the problem solved?
