Good to see you out there tonight Brian.
Well it’s MEA week in Minnesota… I don’t know exactly what MEA stands for but I do know that it means the kids in Minnesota don’t have school on Thursday or Friday of this week. I saw the forecast was looking very nice for Wednesday evening… relatively warm temperatures and light winds. So I asked my 7th grade son if he wanted to go sturgeon fishing. Sure, he says. Because of his swim team practice (it’s always something it seems) we didn’t get on the water until well after dark.
We stayed at our first spot for well over an hour without a bite so we decided to try a different spot. We were at the second spot for a long time too without a bite. It was a beautiful night the but sturgeon weren’t cooperating. I’m thinking… just one bite…. all we need is just one bite to make the evening. Shortly thereafter I hear the clicker on the fourth rod starting to click and the rod tip starting to bounce lightly. Fish On! I pulled the rod out of the holder and handed it to my boy. I thought it was a good fish by the way the rod was just doubled over and line was being taken out. My boy is not strong enough to control the fish in any significant manner… he’s just trying to hold on and crank the handle when possible. I could’t get the back anchor up soon enough and the fish got a wrap around that rope. No sooner than we got that straightened out and the fish wrapped the bow anchor. Luckily we got the fish off that too somehow without losing it. So the fight’s still on but now I see the other rods starting to bounce and dance. Arrgh… the fish has now got those lines in the mix too. I don’t know what to do at this point so I tell him to just keep reeling. Luck was on our side and the fish came to the surface near the bow and I managed to get the net under it. We measured it at 52″ … not too bad for a first sturgeon. I’m sure it’s something he’ll always remember; I know I will.
