Emissions Law

I just read that our fearless leader tampon Timmy signed a bill a year ago that put us in the same emissions laws a California. Now you can’t buy a new vehicle from the Dakotas or Wisconsin that isn’t equipped with California emissions. No word on emissions testing but I would not be surprised if that gets dropped on us in the next year or so. There was no debate, no vote, he just did it.
Like Matt said in the light rail thread, there’s far too many things California and Minnesota have in common.
When is the next election for MN governor? It couldn’t come soon enough in my eyes.

2026 I believe. Elected officials are voted to work at the will of the people yet we see constantly how things such as this are forced upon us without any of the other elected officials getting a vote for the people they represent.

This sounds about right. I’d call the guy a knucklehead if he hadn’t said it himself on national television. It’s the only truth he told while the campaign handlers allowed him to speak early on in the campaign before putting the muzzle on.

You think Timmy coming for your cars is scary? What about your kids?

Starting this fall for the 2025-26 school year, Minnesota’s public schools will be required to teach third-graders how to use non-binary gender pronouns in writing sentences.

Did y’all know those horrible California LEV requirements were the same as federal requirements from 2012 to 2020 until Federal got relaxed? We all seemed to survive that whistling

The governor cannot create a law on his own. He only signs it once passed by both chambers of the MN state legislative branch. It had to originate from one of those two, and pass both chambers first.

Edit, it does appear that the MPCA did in fact adopt these emissions standards unilaterally and it was upheld in the MN Court of Appeals. So I’m wrong on my initial statement.

I looked it up, 17 other states have also adopted these emission standards.

I think there are 14 or 15 states now that follow the California (and EPA 2012-2020) regs. I doubt there are many cars being made in separate versions anymore. Everyone go pop your hood and look at the sticker, I bet there’s a lot of California compliant vehicles you’re already driving.

Its about manufacturer credits and requiring manufacturers to put vehicles in the dealer lots on a point system that favors all electric vehicles over hybrid and internal combustion.

No, California and federal emissions have been different since the 90’s.

17 states now align with CA emissions standards.

No new laws or regulations have recently been passed regarding emissions. Todays news was that the Minnesota Court of Appeals upheld the statute aligning Minnesota emissions standards with California emissions standards. The statute specifically excludes complying with California’s upcoming ban on gasoline powered vehicles.

Reef, there’s many different components under the hood of a CA compliant car and a federal compliant car. It’s this way on cars from all of the last 3 decades. They’re different, tell me what you want but I see them every day.

There have been a number of SCOTUS rulings in the last 4 years that have clipped the wings of our 3 latter agencies like the EPA.
A couple that I can think of are West Virginia vs the EPA and Chevron Deference.

Here’s window stickers for the first 2024 F150 and Tundras that I looked at that are both “50 states” compliant, aka California compliant. And the sticker for my RAM that says it’s CA compliant. What would be different in these?

Edit to add: checked some dealerships in North Dakota and Wisconsin and they are also 50 state vehicles sitting on the lots.

You can throw out fun little insults and call names all you like but it’s been a long freaking time since a democrat won a state-wide general election in Minnesota. In ‘22 walz won by an almost 8 point margin. The last time a republican won a statewide general race in 2006, Tim pawlenty won by less than 1 point as an incumbent and the DFL won every other statewide race that year.

If you go back in history and look at MN governors since the 1960s, the only true “conservative” republicans were Tpaw and something called Harold levander in 1966. Arne Carlson was barely a republican and Al quie was textbook moderate. The Republican Party no longer promotes moderate candidates, and a MAGA conservative has 0% chance of winning a statewide general race here.

Maybe you can convince Jesse the body to give it another go.

The funny part is Pawlenty was the first gov to propose following California Clean Car standards and signed the Next Generation Energy Act that included vehicle emissions standards. The law that everybody is all concerned with now was signed 3 years ago, and is receiving media attention because they are trying to repeal it.

In 2022 Walz lost the outstate by 200k votes, but won Hennepin and Ramsey County by 400k votes. And with the way MSP and StP are run, I don’t foresee that staying such an overwhelmingly blue area. On the flip side the MN Republican party is a mess with few, if any, real leaders. Hopefully someone comes forward as we do NOT want St Louis Park Peggy representing the Tribe in the senate for us.
