Water temps are between 65-70 degrees now and the fish are now holding to patterns. The spring kicked off with cold water, but this last week’s extremely warm temps brought the water up to 65 quickly. The walleye changed depths nearly every day for a while but everything seems to be stabilizing now.
So here’s what to look for:
Bass are holding tight to shore, my favorite lure choice hands down is the TriggerX Aggression Minnow in pearl white on a 2/0-3/0 VMC 7311 Fastgrip worm hook for optimal hook ups. Casting directly to the shoreline or next to fallen trees has been deadly for some big smallies lately!
Pike have been found all over from fallen trees to shallow bays, as well as the growing weed beds, within a few weeks shallow weed-lines will be your best spot for some good pike action. Original Floaters, Aggression Minnows, and inline spinners have been rocking the pike.
Walleye are more often found in shallow lately with leeches taking over as the primary live bait option. As of right now 5-10 feet has been producing the larger fish while 15-20 feet is where you will be likely to bring up some eaters. They have migrated from the currents to the points opening up into larger bays and below/above steady drops. Think orange for stained water, and silver/blue for the clearer lakes.
Lake Trout have been found near sloping shorelines off rock walls as well as around islands, points and saddles, 15-20 feet deep diving Raps have been clutch lately in bringing the big girls into the boat, but spoons and jigs have been grabbing many fish as well. Silver/red, silver/blue, silver, and white have been the best colors lately.
As always, if you have any questions about Ely area fishing and the boundary waters, feel free to shoot me a PM.
