Elliott Rippineye Rod

I bought a new rod and have a situation that I’m hoping someone can help me with.

The Elliott rods have a cutout on the handle where the spinning reel is supposed to mount. The inset area is larger than the base of the reel, and I’m having trouble getting the reel steady.

I’m using the 3M tape, as tight as I can get it, but because the inset area is larger than the reel base, there’s a bit of wobble and it doesn’t anchor very well. Without that inset area, it would be better.

    Any tips? I appreciate it!

Would reel bands work better? The handle on Elliot rods is what has kept me from purchasing one. Never heard of the problem you describe but split handles are a deal stopper for me.

Since the handle diameter on those is a bit larger, maybe remove a bit of material?

Can you put a shim of some kind the same size as the reel foot to build it down?

What about a popcan shim behind the reel foot. They are thinner and you can use a couple.

The reel is taped on tight enough that it isn’t going anywhere, but there’s room in that inset space for the reel base to wobble from side to side.

The shim idea is probably easiest, in order to keep it from shifting, but that seems like an adjustment a guy shouldn’t need to make on that type of rod.

I’ve never tried bands on a reel, but it’s worth a shot. At this point, I’m reluctant to cut away part of the handle, but that might be a consideration too.

Couple options I determined, first you could pre-wrap the reel foot with electric tape to the diameter you need to secure the fit in the Syncork. I would wrap in a single neat wrap on either side of the reel foot vs wrapping the entire reel foot. Then tape the reel to the handle. The prewrap will tighten the depth and width in that inset Syncork gap.

I have, “The Odyssey” (phenomenal rod) I had some thin sheet rubber sitting around, I cut it to fit the Syncork reel seat, laid it inside of the inset to a depth that allowed my tape to hold the reel in the rod securely. It serves as a shin. Worked great.

    Hope that helps.

Can you post photos of what you’re talking about? When I look up photos of those rods, they just look like a split grip. Looks to me like the reel should just tape or band onto the larger part of the grip.

Wormdunker mentioned the Elliott Odyssey rod, and that product page has a picture of what I’m talking about.

You can see the cutout/inset in the grip. The cutout is too long and wide for the reel I’m using, a Shimano Stradic.
