Electric Lawnmower?

Our lawn mower went to the big lawn in the sky. Interested in the Toro 60v Lithium Ion mower as a replacement, we have a flat relatively small lawn and this is supposed to be good for 45 minutes of run time. That should be sufficient for our use, but curious if anyone has any first hand experience with this particular mower, or electrics in general?

I made the switch last year. Think I bought the EGO 56v self propelled and it works fine, I’m not sure it cuts quite as good as a gas mower but I wouldn’t go back. I’d say that run time is accurate. Usually takes me 30-35 minutes to mow and it never runs out of juice.

I really like the battery powered weed whip too!

I suppose I’ll sell the mower once we move and have 4-5 acres to mow but I might keep it around for a while to see if I need it for any reason.

I had a Black and Decker around 20 years ago. It was a mulcher.
Mine had two lead acid batteries powering it. I replace them once in the 7 years we used it.

If your lawn is long or too wet (like in the morning), it just won’t cut.

Besides that, I liked it because the FW and FD could always start it, never had to worry about oil and it was just maintenance free with the exception of sharpening the blade. I bought an extra one for quick changes and sharpen when I had the time.

I know nothing about the ion battery mowers of course.

My mom has one for her metro residential size yard. I believe she has the EGO as well. I’ve used it a few times with no issues. Actually pretty handy.

I’ve been looking into this myself and have been leaning toward the EGO simply because of the full suite of other tools/accessories you can run off of the same battery, especially the chain saw and pole saw. Good luck with what you decide.

May I ask the purpose of going electric? I guess what I’m getting at is a few relatives have gone electric for some yard equipment. Most have done it for weight and getting rid of the cord. But as for a lawnmower, I don’t see any practical reason except noise.

I love the electric weed whhhhip, blower, and I actually think the chainsaw is actually really good (for basic low needs). If there’s a good reason for the mower, please share. I’m curious as well.

Price is similar to a gas mower (about $100 more than the comparable gas), ease of maintenance, ability for the wife to run easily, and don’t have to deal with gas and oil.

Good to hear on the experiences with the EGO, the place I checked them out said they have had a lot of issues with the EGO and strongly recommended the Toro over it. But they are a Toro dealer too.

You might as well go all-in with one of these.

Haha maybe for the next house with a lot more acreage!

Mine was quiet running but when cutting grass it seemed comparable to a gas engine. It wasn’t THAT quiet.

I live in south Minneapolis and have a small yard so I went with the big Ryobi last year. They were on sale at Home Depot so I think I paid $300. Quiet, no maintenance, and super light. I have a bunch of their other lithium tools and have always had good luck.

I don’t think they cut quite as well as a gas mower but it’s not really noticeable. Plus, my wife couldn’t mow in the past because if a small hill. With the lighter mower it’s no problem for her. I’ll never own a gas mower again.

I had one years ago and it was great, but of course battery life back then was pretty bad so when the battery went bad, it was almost impossible to get a replacement and I went back to gas. My son bought the Ryobi last year and loves it. Main reasons are, quiet, light weight, no gas, maintenance, etc. I have priced them and pretty comparable anymore. IF my mower dies, I would get an electric now for sure.

Strikemaster or ion augers should branch into electric mowers. Their dealers would have a product to sell all year. You could use your same battery–summer and winter!

If you are going electric, you might as well go all the way…

I bought an electric (cordless) edger and it really lacks in power. If I edge religiously, it is fine but doesn’t do the job if there is any overgrowth. I don’t know if the mowers are similar but it would suck if you missed a week for whatever reason and the electric wasn’t up to the job.

Probably gonna end up being a top-10 IDO line of the year.

In all serious, I think the autonomous mowers will explode once the proper price point is met. They are already approaching the 1k mark, and crappier ones can be had for less. Vacuums and pool cleaners are already widely used with basically the same tech, seems logical lawns are next.

If they spend more time “micro cutting” and creating a better lawn, fine. I personally don’t care if it looks worse – just give me a lawn roomba and make mowing go away.

I’m waiting for the autonomous lawn mower that cuts grass…

…and shoots lasers at the weeds.
