Electric auger

I am buying a new auger for this upcoming year and was entertaining the idea of one of the new battery augers, but have my doubts. I have had constant problems with my new Lazer Pro that I never had with older Lazers and just can’t trust it on another trip to LOTW or Winnipeg. My question is: did anyone use these on the big waters up north? HAs anyone drilled “40 holes” through 4 feet of ice on Lake Winnipeg in March, or through 3 ft ice when it was -25. How did it perform?

    Thanks in advance,
    Greg

I got an ION, when the battery gets cold, they suck. Perfect for drilling in a house when you don’t want fumes. Cuts a bit slower than gas.
With that said I just picked up an Eskimo.

I have an electric strike master. 8″ auger in 3.5+’ of ice in -25 or colder weather is tuff on the batteries. Eight holes is about it in those conditions on the 12 volt battery alone. When you are fishing those conditions you are usually traveling via truck, atv or some other vehicle that has a battery. In that scenario you can keep drilling no problem with the accessory cable that comes with the electric augers.

I’m a hard core Ion guy but 4 feet of ice and moving around wouldn’t be a good application for them unless you had a couple extra batteries. Mine will do about 15-20 holes in 3 1/2 feet. That’s an 8 inch though, the 6 will do a lot more but you usually don’t go to Canada for small fish. Was your problem blades or engine? Usually the engines are great but lazer blades are NEVER dependable. Maybe you just need a chipper blade?

Thanks guys! That’s exactly the advice I was looking for. My issue was with the powerhead. It never ran great right from the start. The first year I went through 2 fuel hoses and the clutch spring went out. The next year the clutch spring went out again and the fuel line from the primer to the engine started leaking. I must have got a lemon. My old Lazer is 15 yrs old, has cut thousands of holes and still runs ok. This new Lazer was very disappointing and their customer service ticked me off. Thanks again!

They aren’t the nice small town company they once were. They were fantastic then and a penny here or there didn’t get in the way of quality or service. Not so anymore.
