Anyone have tips and tricks to catching eelpout, I have never targeted them before but we will be heading to MilleLacs this week for some tullibees and would like to try and hit some eelpout while up there

Try fishing for everything but an eelpout then you’ll catch one. whistling
Seriously, I seem to randomly catch them at night fishing for eyes.

Big minnows or small suckers on a hook with a bit of weight clipped on 6″ above the hook. Use a set line close to the bottom at night.

Only problem is that they will swallow the whole thing and you will end up gut hooking them. If you are going to harvest, no problem. Otherwise, you might want to have some sort of jig head to perhaps stop them from swallowing.

Fish where you would normally fish for walleye basically. I like the big nasty tackle lures (Trout & Pout spoon) with at least 1 minnow hanging on it (sometimes more) pound the ground a bit and wait for them to come suck it down!

My experience is they taste better than walleye when fresh.
They did not taste so good once frozen.

This video will take a huge part of the learning curve out for you. A video from the Canadian boys that I’ve been trying to learn from for the past few years.

From my experience, I luck into walleye while fishing for them right at dusk. Then the pouts show up shortly after. The eelpout are hands down my favorite freshwater fish to eat!

If you leave them on the ice at LOTW the resort guys will snatch them up pretty fast and eat them for lunch. They love em. They cut them in pieces, boil in sprite and dunk in butter.
Never tried them before but if I get one this year I’ll give it a try.

Don’t do that old wives tail about boiling them in pop. Batter and deep fry, best eating freshwater fish hands down!
