How do you place an automatic bid?
I am currently bidding on a #6 Kodiak bear trap (for the wall) and I want it badly, but don’t know how do place an auto bid. I’ve lost out on a couple items in the last second on a few other items and don’t want it to happen again.
FYI – Bidding ends at 8pm tonight.

Its when you enter the highest price you are willing to pay and then ebay will automatically use that max to bid higher than other bids until you reach your max bid.

So I would just but my high bid number in here and hit bid again?

Yep – that’s exactly how it works. Go get that bear trap.

Are you really going to hang a $700 bear trap on the wall? shock

    I guess better than a $700 painting.

Exactly, that’s man art. Well worth it in my book.

If it says Kodiak on the pan it is most likely a Jim River reproduction. I believe they were made in South Dakota in the 1980-1990’s. Original Newhouse #5’s and 6’s are going for thousands of dollars.

They make setting clamps for the springs which you can us to compress the springs and display it open without welding the trap open. Taking the temper out of the springs by heating them up will allow you to do the same.

Once you weld it or heat the springs the value goes way down. Maybe that doesn’t matter and just enjoy it hanging on the wall.

Hint for your next ebay purchase. Snipe.

Bidding early only moves the price up farther. Wait until the end to bid.
I used to buy and sell collectable music on Ebay many years ago and learned quickly that I was usually bidding against the same people, who were also searching for collectable music.

    I would bid.
    They would bid.
    Repeat for five days.

Instead, I learned to watch the auction from a bookmark and a reminder. Never use the watch function, that just signals other buyers that there is more interest. I wouldn’t bid on items with lots of watchers because they were usually planning to snipe as well.

To snipe, open the auction multiple times in multiple tabs in your browser. Within the last couple of minutes before the auction closes enter in a few prices, first what you would like to pay, second a higher pain point, lastly your highest pain point.

When the auction gets under a minute, start counting down to your placement plan leaving time to place other bids from the other tabs that were already loaded and ready to fire.

I think the closest I have gotten to the final bid was less than four seconds of the auction close. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose. In my book, if I still have my money, I didn’t really lose anything anyway.
