Already wider than the ears by a few inches and looks like he could have some good mass!

be nice to see how much bigger he gets. 2 1/2 months left to grow. Do you
put any mineral out suppose to help grow bigger. They love my trophy rock.June 13, 2015 at 12:07 pm #1550006I used to use Trophy Rock but have been mixing my own the last 2 years.
Di-Calcium Phosphate and Minerals.
I get it in 50 lb bags and mix it.
They really hit it hard and it mixes with the dirt so they can lick it up.
Seems to be working! The does love it too.
These pics are from 1 week previous from the same buck…at least I think it’s the same one.Attachments:

Also, where do you get the ingredients?
I’ve been buying pre-mix minerals, but now that I have 3 established mineral licks, $25 a bag is getting a little pricy.

DEER HOMEMADE MINERAL MIX RECIPE
Ingredients: Makes 200 lbs.
1 part Di-calcium phosphate, this is a dairy feed additive bought at feed stores. Comes in 50lb Bags and you need one bag.
2 parts Trace mineral salt, the red and loos kind without the medications. Comes in 50lb Bags. You need two bags.
1 part Stock salt, ice cream salt.
Comes in 50lb Bags. You need one bag.I copied it off of a QDMA website. Everything should be at Fleet or your local feed mill. I bought a big plastic tote and mix it in there and them move it to 5 gallon buckets with lids for storage.
DTdeertrackerPosts: 9237June 15, 2015 at 2:25 pm #1550205We use a similar mix, but we add in Dried Molasses, it really throws the aroma out there. Only negative is that we really need to make sure the top stays tight on the tote. The molasses can get rock hard in a hurry on humid days.

DTGrouse: DT’s recipe is about it but I don’t use the ice cream salt. I actually mix mine about 2 parts Di-Cal to 1 part mineral. The mineral part is a bit spendy so I skimp on that. Maybe I shouldn’t and I’d get even better results but I have to draw the line on money at some point.
I get my bags at Fleet Farm. And yep, about $30 for 200 lbs is pretty close, give or take.
Mine mixes in with the dirt and with all this rain, it looks like it is gone but just mixed in. I try to refresh mine about every 2 or 3 weeks.
I’ve never tried the molasses…but then never needed to. I think the salt is a natural attractant so I didn’t think I needed anything more.
June 16, 2015 at 4:05 pm #1550451Thanks for sharing the home brew recipes, guys. This is just in time, I need a refresh on all 3 of my lick sites and $30 for 200 pounds is much better than $75 for the 3 50 pound bags of the stuff I’ve been buying.

June 17, 2015 at 11:55 am #1550625Update: I found all the necessary ingredients at Fleet Farm last night. Total cost for 200 pounds of mineral per DeerTracker’s instructions above: $46.50 including tax.
I suspect the mineral prices have been going up, but it’s still far cheaper than buying the pre-mix stuff at $25 per bag. Which I just discovered, BTW, was a 40 pound bag of the stuff I was buying, not a 50 pound bag as I’d thought. So the home brew is an even better deal.

June 17, 2015 at 1:49 pm #1550654I have been using this recipe for about 4 years now and have had good luck with it. The di-cal has been steadily going up, but yeah still a great deal over buying premixed.
Funny thing is I have the exact same recipe right down to the misspelled word “loos” in my saved emails. DT, do you remember the user name of the guy who posted it on QDMA?
deertrackerPosts: 9237June 18, 2015 at 10:25 am #1550804I have to figure out a way to upgrade my feed and seed mixing capacity guys. It’s like I’m running a cattle ranch or something. Night before last I was mixing seed blends for food plots. Last night I was mixing 200 pounds of mineral and I didn’t have big enough tub to mix it in so I made a little mess in the garage.
This is in addition to the 400-some pounds of food plot seed I have had to find dry places to stack in the shed and in the garage last week. That had Mrs. Grouse looking at me sideways, but generally being a good sport.
Everything would have been fine except Mrs. Grouse went out to the garage to get her purse out of her little SUV and didn’t put on shoes. So she stepped bare foot on a couple of salt chunks, you know the really sharp ones? Yipe!
Well, needless to say, I heard about it! So I was sent out to immediately sweep the garage.
Gotta find a bigger tub or something. The Senior Management is not on board with all this agricultural activity going on within the normally well-ordered confines of Grouse Park.
You know what would be really awesome? A mortar mixer! Upgrade!

June 18, 2015 at 10:38 am #1550806Grouse, I never mix my mineral until I put it in the ground. I don’t know why, but I was told not to mix it until you apply it to your site. Sorry, I guess it’s a little late to tell you that now:( Anyway, I take the bags out to the site with me and just use a coffee can to deploy the mineral, one coffee can of each of the 2 bags, then 2 coffee cans of the trace mineral, then mix it with a shovel into the dirt.
Seed storage is tough unless you have a good spot for it. I have a crawl space in my house which is a PITA to access with 50lb bags of seed, but it’s out of the way, dry, out of the sun and fairly temp controlled, all 3 conditions are very important if you are going to store seed until the following year. I currently have 18 bags of seed in there and I dread the day that I have to pull it out for planting. I do have a pole barn, but the hot/cold of MN will affect the seeds germination so I store it in the house. As long as I can prove it’s mouse free the wife is ok with that.
