Early Morning Weirdness

I was Bass fishing early this morning and doing pretty well. I was using my 8 weight fly rod and a big black popper. Off the end of a dock, I had a strange swirling hit followed by a strange, floppy kind of fight. Definitely not a bass. Well, it was a Bullhead! In 60 years of fishing I’ve caught plenty of Bullheads, but certainly not on a top water fly. Strange days.

They’ve been feasting on the mayflies, that’s why.

I hadn’t thought of Mayflies, that makes sense.

I didn’t keep it. I’ve eaten plenty of Bullheads but only when they’ve come from cold water.

We went down to Wabasha on Saturday by boat. I notice many more fish then normal boiling the surface. With the Mayfly skin scum lines in the water, I figured there were still some live ones working toward the surface.

It’s a different year for sure!

I caught a couple nice size brown bullheads fishing for bass with plastic worms. They are definitely a different animal than yellow and black bullies.

Mastering the elusive dry fly bullhead bite. You’re my fly fishing hero, Steve.

Lefty, Lee, and Rootski. Kind of has a nice ring to it.
