Early ice red lake

So in the past 5 years I’ve done red lake ice trips out of Rogers staying in permanents. I’d like to try some early ice up there this year. Looking for information for some pre planning. If your doing a 2-3 day trip are you driven to hotels/motels for the night? Are you lodging somewhere out of the resort? How early can you somewhat expect safe ice? (I know weather plays its role) Do you need months advance booking or can you play off the ice reports?

I might call Rogers and see what their plans are for early ice. Maybe they have some more suggestions for first ice.

This year could be dynamite for walleyes because the numbers and the size are going to be there.

    Bring on the ice!

When James and I were up there for early ice 2012 we stayed at Roger’s in a permanent house that they had set up on shore until the ice was thick enough. If I remember correctly it was something like $20 per person per night. I’m pretty sure other resorts besides Roger’s do the same. You’re going to have to play it by ear for making reservations most likely, but you could check with Roger’s to find out for sure.

I have been able to get out with the ATV the first or second weekend in December the past two years. I have stayed at bear paws both times.

So, what is it like staying in a fish house overnight, on shore, with a guy as high strung as James. Did you get any sleep?
