So the Early forecast for Carlton has saturday looking the best, but another hot opener. They have Saturday a high of 40 low of 30 sunday, Monday, Tuesday high of 51 and low of 38. The good news they have a NW wind switching to the W then to SW. Its early yet I know, but I know where I will be if the weather holds true. ‘

Good luck I hope everyone has good stands picked out! So pumped!

    Allan,
What have you been seeing for deer numbers in Carlton? I’m about 35 miles west on Hwy 210 and it’s been pretty sparse. Not as bad as last year but not a whole lot better.

Well it depends on where your at. My parents has a lot of deer, mainly does but bucks are starting to show up. We have doe and single fawn, doe and twins, and a doe with triplets. We have seen 6 or 7 different bucks mainly small but two nice ones.
Now my aunts in sawyer has all kinds of bucks and two does. However I heard of a mile or two away from both those spots have been slow. Last year we saw like 13 to 18 different bucks alone we were done hunting after opening weekend.

I have noticed that a lot of the bucks aren’t coming into fields yet until way late. My plan and where I have seen most of the buck activity is to be on the edge of swamps in the pines. I also think once we get a good cold snap things will move a lot better. We only had a few cold days and with the weather looking warmer for another week I am not expecting to much up until the next cold snap. until then I would look at places you may have over looked such as swamps it has been a fairly dry fall up until the last week or two so I feel that the deer are staying in the swamps.

That sounds encouraging. Good to hear you’re seeing decent numbers. I’ve been noticing evening deer feeding in fields in the adjacent section. I think we’ve had some micro things, however, that have slowed the recovery in our section following the 2013-2014 winter. Namely, intensive wolf activity in 2014 and a decent section of logging early 2015. They haven’t been as noticeable this summer/fall but we did find a fresh deer kill over Halloween weekend. I fear a number of the fawns haven’t survived the past two years. We saw some on trail cameras earlier this summer but since September I think I’ve only seen a single fawn. We seem to have things in flux right now and our location may lag a couple years before deer numbers build to some better levels.
