I have a wall mount ventless heater and ran into something I dont understand, maybe someone here has a idea. This is my first fall using the heater. I bought a 40lb tank to get 2+ days of heat rather that using 20lb tanks. I had the 40lb tank filled, used it 2 weekends ago, worked great and went thru 6gal out of the 8gal that the tank was filled with. I had it refilled last week and went to use it this past weekend and the heater would fire up but after a minute or so it would go out and not relight. I noticed the regulator was frosting up on the hose. I switched over to a 20lb tank I had and no problems (also the regulator did not frost up with the 20lb tank)

Over the weekend, I went back and forth trying the 40lb tank again, adjusting the valve on the tank a little each time. Every time the heater would light, work for a minute or 2 then go out as the regulator frosted up.

Im going to try the 40lb tank on something else to see if I have the same issue, just havent gotten that far yet. Wondering if anyone hear has any ideas of why it wouldnt work or if somehow refilling a tank can be done incorrectly or cause problems?

Which hose are you using to connect the two ? Had the same problem a couple of years ago. Ending up switching out the hoses and got it to work.

Im using the same hose, just switching tanks. It seems strange that it worked fine the 1 time I used the 40lb tank and now does work after I had it refilled.

Try opening the valve real slow . If nothing I ended up switching out the supply hose. Mr heater model f273072 is the one I got to work. The other was a f273703-44 or 144 no go with them.

Have had this happen with a grill too… when you take the hose off, is there a release of gas/pressure ? Unhooking and hooking up and like said, open the valve slow. Good luck !

Yes, when I would disconnect the hose from the 40lb tank there was a release of gas/pressure

I have to get the 20lb tank refilled and was planning to ask the place that fills my tanks to see what they think about the 40lb tank. Its just wierd that the first time the 40lb tank was filled there were no problems (filled by a different place) and now this time I have the problems?

It will be a few weeks before Im back to try it out. Thanks to all for the suggestions

I took the 40lb tank back in today, the guy weighed it and said it was 4lbs heavier than it should be. He explained that there is a “float” inside the 20 thru 40lb tanks that once the tank hits 80% full, it should stop allowing more in the tank. Maybe that didnt happen in this case, but he did weigh another tank he had there and it was the same weight as mine

Either way, he emptied my tank and refilled it going by weight instead of waiting for it to auto stop. We will see what happens.

He also mentioned that all tanks should be opened slowly, but fully opened and there should not be any frost on the regulator on the hose. So maybe the tank was just overfilled?

The heater I hook it up to is 2hrs north, so I will try it on a turkey fryer this weekend to see how it works

Do you open the valve on the tank with the valve shut off on the heater?
Some regulators will partially shut off if the tank valve is opened with a gas valve on the appliance open as some form of leak detection. I had it happen on gas grills before

I have always opened the valve on the tank before switching the heater from “off” to “pilot”, then lighting the pilot

Being overfilled can cause the freezing. It’s probably fixed now.

After he emptied the tank and refilled it based on weight rather than waiting for the auto-shutoff, it worked fine with a turkey fryer burner last night. It will be a few weeks before I try it on the heater again (its 2hrs north), I have more confidence at least

I had the same issue with an overfilled tank. I vented it to atmosphere outside (probably not the safest thing) for a little bit and then it worked fine. It is an 11 lb tank that had the fella at menards totally confused, so no real surprise it happened.
