This warmer than normal weather has me thinking about North Shore streams, particularly near Duluth where they stock loopers. Is this viable? Can you throw flies at them around the river mouths and see any action?

I have heard a few report of steelies and coasters still hanging around very near the mouths in rivers. I would call a fly shop up here first or marine general to get a more up to date report.

Its almost too nice not to try. Loopers and steelhead generally will show up a bit later on, but with the lake open and some water going into the creeks and streams to offer some flow you may find some lingering. Cohos should start showing up too soon.

Something to think about in low light is a Laker bite right off the current as it goes into the lake. Low light = last hour or so of daylight.

With this run of great weather I have been spending a lot of time on the shores around here and leaving the boat in the garage. If a trip to the shore was in the stars right about now I’d be on my way. It wouldn’t take a lot to get the cabin up to comfy temps with this weather upon us.

This shore fishing on the North Shore is on my long bucket list of things to do. That place holds a special place in my heart.

I’m wondering though, with my Uncle working for years up there at the ore yards and hearing the wolf stories, is it ever a concern fishing from shore in running into these things? Is it recommended to carry protection? Not much of a concern?

Shore fishing in the cities certainly can have its runins, but a pack of wolves is on another level. Curious to others thoughts.

Steve I haven’t been out there this year but the Bookies should be on the way out now and the steelies do make a winter run and I feel like they would be in there. However the one that really shines is the pink salmon. More northern streams have them. You can fly fish most of the streams if you are a decent fly fisherman and you can do a roll cast or some spey casts like a snap t you can really get into some tight stuff but most of the mouths and pools your fine with taking a back cast.

Some good flies right now, I know you will probably yell at me if you are a traditional fly fisherman, are bigger streamers like the Honey Badger, sex dungeon, or a Natty Light. I know they are not traditional, but they are good flies for big fish. You can also get them on egg patterns, prince nymph, Hex nymph, or deer hair sculpin.

Cripes. Go fishing and forget about running into wolves. Where most of the fishing is at is not someplace where wolves are going to be wandering around and if one comes along it’ll just wander off. Wolves don’t wany anything from Man other than to be left alone. Wolves are much lesser threat to you than the highways you’ll travel to get up there to fish.
