Duluth-Lake Superior Ice

The false hope from out of towners since we had the good ice a few years back is entertaining.

False hope? Oh, ok. The denial from the locals is equally as entertaining and won’t keep the masses away when it freezes.

When you live this far away you actually pay more attention to how the lake behaves to the weather than most of the locals. Personally, I check conditions on average 3 times a day, EVERY DAY as long as I have an internet connection. Everything from air temp, water temp, wave height, wind direction, surface currents, web cams, satellite images, mud lines, past conditions, fishing reports, and much more. Every day.

Btw. I’ve ice fished on Superior in Duluth 3 of the past 7 seasons. If it happens this year it’ll be 4 out of 8. So much for global warming Mr Gore.

There’s a paper thin sheet out there today after relatively mild temps overnight.

I heard a rumor that people were out fishing around Duluth recently. Any truth to that? Anybody get out?

I probably won’t be able to make it this year unless something unusual happens weather wise but always fun to read reports from the big lake.

I wouldn’t know where they were fishing around Duluth. They were surfing on 8-12 foot waves there the other day. No ice at Two Harbors either, or at least none that will support safe fishing. I’m not certain about the Bayfield area. There may be ice back in the big bay there.

Ice is as mentioned, reliant on the wind. 8″ of clear ice can go in a heartbeat if some winds get to it.

It was all piled jumble ice yesterday that was loosely packed and 15mph S winds. As mentioned it was completely open water mid week with whale turds bobbing around with boards.

It’s not looking good with snow tomorrow and low 30s this week.

Interesting. It was actually yesterday morning someone said they were fishing by 21st street. It surprised me as I didn’t think we had the weather needed to set that up this year and as mentioned it was windy yesterday.

If anyone was on the ice yesterday off 21st St they haven’t got enough IQ to count the holes for their shoelaces. I don’t know where you’re from curley, but I wouldn’t bank on fishing there if you’re more than a 15 minute drive. At this time of the year if there is ice there today, don’t bank on it being there tomorrow. You’d want a week of minus 0 weather for decent ice and that’s if it wasn’t blowing when it set up.

It must have been a bogus report. I’m about 2 hours south of Duluth. I fished out there two different years but I didn’t expect to this year with the much more mild temps.

Was surprised to hear “they” were out there. Sounds like “they” must not have been.

I knew it was only a matter of time…..
When I grabbed some takeout at China Cafe on Tuesday after work I thought for sure I was going to see someone(s) out on it when I headed over 21st to head home.

Mama Gump also said “Dying is a part of living” – Jim Bob may well prove that

Well Jim Bob isn’t out there anymore so he either wised up and went in went in because the fish weren’t biting or he fell in.

Bigdill was up there a week ago. Brought my ice fishing gear but couldn’t find ice that would hold my body weight. There’s still hope.

The shipping season is starting soon. The Soo Locks open March 25. They are running the icebreaker in the harbor and will run thru any ice close to shore and at the entrances. Hate to say it but the odds are close to zero that you will ice fish the lake this season.
