Anyone else going on the wagon for the month? My FW had the idea to do it. She also just checked on life insurance so I’m keeping a close eye on her. Not sure of her motives yet.

Dry January

I’m gonna be close. I’ve never much liked the idea but the older I get my body needs some dry spells here and there. Good luck.
Mark UidenichPosts: 41January 4, 2025 at 11:56 am #2308581I basically quit drinking years ago. Just the occasional beer now. Found out there was more money around and I didn’t miss the hangovers and slow starts at all. I can’t imagine what a night of drinking like I did in my 20’s & 30’s would cost today.
January 4, 2025 at 12:29 pm #2308589I did a quit drinking month a couple years ago, and still haven’t drank since. Might have a occasional beer but it’s pretty rare.
January 4, 2025 at 12:54 pm #2308590I’d be OK if it didn’t snow.
good one.
i’m with ya dutchy…..i may have more then you but not like my younger days. had a few new years eve……..but not sure when the next one is yet either. and even when i do……my body tells me you had enough. i cant remember the last time i felt like crap in the morning to blame it on booze.
i cant even say i only drink on weekends anymore…..being retired and heading to the cabin weekdays…..well……
January 4, 2025 at 1:01 pm #2308594Its been a dry January since 1980 for me , odds are likely death or prison was near in my future had i choose to continue down that road . Life is good !
January 4, 2025 at 1:19 pm #2308597Quit drinking a couple years back. One of the best choices I have made
StanleyPosts: 1118January 4, 2025 at 1:23 pm #2308599Was never a big drinker then got to the point I could take it or leave it. Now I just don’t drink by choice. I will say we do need snow though.
Gitchi GummiPosts: 3215January 4, 2025 at 1:30 pm #2308600I get why people do it but regular exercise would make a much bigger impact. It’s shocking to me how many people don’t exercise at all. But it makes sense when you find out that close to half American adults are obese.
ThunderLund78Posts: 2740January 4, 2025 at 2:02 pm #2308602I used to really hit ‘er hard, socially – and still do on the rare occasion but I’ve amazed myself over the last couple of years of how much I’ve naturally cut back. I almost never drink alone, and when I do, it’s a bourbon, a nice cocktail or a glass of wine, and that’s it. Been getting much better at moderation, as well. At a hockey tournament right now and nursed one big mixer in my sipper all night last night. Feel great today, unlike most other parents. We’ll see what tonight brings. I still like the drinkin’, but the next day gets harder and harder.

BrittmanPosts: 2131January 4, 2025 at 2:27 pm #2308611Surgeon General is proposing putting an alcohol causes cancer sticker on alcoholic beverages just like tobacco products. Not sure that has prevented anyone from much of anything … but … anyways
Where I grew up most of us started drinking around 14-15 years old. When I was 25 or so I had a preemployment physical for work and the physician said all my liver markers were high and that I should slow down on the alcohol. I did a 180 with a few slips in my late 20s. Still a sipper of beer and red wine when the occasion calls but cannot remember the last time I had more than two in a day.
I too watched the hockey parent crowd (dads and moms) be completely hung over especially on Sunday morning tournament days. I never quite understood the attraction to being wasted in front of 10 – 15-year-old kids and facing a hangover the next morning… I ran into quite a few of these guys at a hockey association golf fundraiser about 10 years later at a nice country club. Many of these same guys were still the same and this was at 3 in the afternoon … I looked a few up on the internet and yep … quite a few had DUIs.
I also know people (some unfortunately too close) that the alcohol demon messed up their finances, marriages, careers, and some eventually died from it. It can be a wicked cycle for more people than you realize … some hide it well.

Same here. Not a ounce of regret
BrittmanPosts: 2131January 4, 2025 at 2:42 pm #2308614We need about 4 inches of snow on the ground and on the ice so that I can take my cleats off. I could also go for some days with temps around 20 – 27F instead of single digit (and not much above that) highs.
ThunderLund78Posts: 2740January 4, 2025 at 2:44 pm #2308615Good move wearing cleats when drinking on the ice! Lessens the risk of fall
(I’m guessing this was meant for the weather thread )
BrittmanPosts: 2131January 4, 2025 at 2:48 pm #2308616I always get irritated by the people that watch others drink and tell you to finish your drink … it is often women in an afterwork setting. I usually push it over towards them or hand it to the person making the comment and saying all yours … Sometimes a beer gets warm or it doesn’t taste the way I thought it would … I am not underage and in desperate need of every ounce of booze to get me drunk. God forbid anyone of those people have to watch my wife and I share a beer when we are out to eat.
Cody MeyersPosts: 446January 4, 2025 at 3:17 pm #2308622I’m doing the dry January thing this year. I rarely ever go too far, but I haven’t taken a month off maybe ever. I found that I like the ritual more than the feeling. A few N/A beers and some kombucha on occasion and I don’t think this will be too tough.
It’s always good to “check in” though

January 4, 2025 at 4:15 pm #2308628Yup,
Sunday afternoon is last eats, then I typically don’t eat until Tuesday pm.
Feels great, never have a stomach issue. And yes, x capitalized on that! but we are friends again.
Lifes good, it really is.
January 4, 2025 at 4:37 pm #2308630I’ve started buying a 12 pack of NA every time I go to the liquor store. I still get my usual bourbons and beers, but having the NA around is a good option too as they’ve come a long ways with flavors and types.
Alcohol is no doubt bad for people in excess. I’d still argue that soda is killing just as many people though. The guy who drinks 5 Mtn. Dews a day or more is just as addicted to chemicals as the guy who has has a bourbon after dinner each night.

Is ‘trainer’ codename for “Belle”?
And you “train” fast on Mondays?
Not going to comment on what you eat…My life would be good too if that were my life.

Bidennomics almost made me tip over at the liquor store the other day though.
