Drought?

So according to the drought monitor released yesterday, there is a significant portion of the state of MN already in stage 2 drought stretching from Alexandria to Duluth and St Cloud north to Brainerd. Additionally, further north of that there is sizable portion in stage 1 minor drought as well. Brainerd has only received 0.96 inches of rain the entire month of June. I also just heard on NPR that its been the warmest June since 1995…and its gonna be warm next week too. Looks like the one area spared so far is the southeast portion of the state.

I live in the west metro and I’m getting sick of the hot weather and lack of rain…and its only late June too. BTW, June is typically the wettest month of the year too with the most rainfall average.

The little spring rain is also on top of little snow this year. I can definitely tell the water is low in the lakes. I’m sure it’s a nice change for the St Croix boaters after several years of no-wake restrictions much of the summer.

Two Harbors area is real dry. As of yesterday when we came home from that area they’d had less than .4″ of rain in June and darned little in May. Duluth’s forecast for today called for some good rain chances and even some threat of severe weather but looking at the weather map for that area it doesn’t appear to have happened.

We’re dry here in Rochester and all of the weather statements calling for significant rain just go around Rochester. We had a nice shower earlier today that left .28″ here at home and supposedly more rain for this evening. We could use a nice 1/4″/hour steady rain all night but if we get any decent amounts of precip we get a deluge it seems and it all comes in twenty minutes.

The storm we saw early this morning is sure delivering in western/southwestern Wisconsin right now.

The forecast the next 7-10 days in this area is not going to help. Lots of upper 80’s to low 90’s without much rain in the forecast. My buddy who is a farmer just North of me says its getting really ugly up his way. Not looking good for the crops. We sure could use one of those all day long soaker type of rains right now.

It’s 2020, nothing will surprise me.

Drought, sure why not, it’s nothing to the fire rain we’ll be getting in August.

Walker was surprisingly green as of yesterday. Lawns looked great, even without the use of sprinklers. My lawn looks awful right now at home.

West suburbs of Minneapolis are very dry, I was really hoping for anything today, next chance looks like Sunday, hopefully it doesn’t dry up and go around us again.

All the rivers I typically fish in the summer are very low. One is even classified as Scrapable. That means plan on scrapping the bottom of the canoe.

My river pool Northside here is already low, after an email with the parkboard they informed me the dam at St Anthony falls has a breech not holding back the pool as normal. Could be really seeing some low water in my part of the city this year.

no more rain since this afternoon so I wasn’t too optimistic but the crawlers were out. plenty of moisture in the grass and my shorts were soaked but in the end, I should be good for another month…….man those worms are fast but its what has been keeping me on the fish this year.

It’s been a few years since I’ve had to water the flowers and grass on a regular basis. I can’t remember the last time I’ve needed to run a sprinkler on the grass. It’s been years. When I was a kid, people would constantly be watering their lawns. We’ve gone through quite a long stretch with rainy summers I guess.

They also said on the news that we only had one day over 90 degrees last summer. That shows you right there how cool and rainy it was.

Alexandria is very dry! Most lakes are a foot low. On a normal year I have about 3′ of water at the end of my dock. I have a lil over a foot. We NEED rain soon!

Same out in Wright county. I can’t remember the last time we had a crispy lawn, until now. You can blame me. We planted 20 spruce this spring and dormant seeded the lawn at our shop last fall!

Our lake place is actually on a reservoir so levels are normal but everything else is bone dry. I’ve got green grass but if I mow it now it will be scorched earth in a couple days.

Forecast is for T storms next week but we need a good steady rain for a entire day and night. My wild blueberries behind the camper are looking a little stressed. Lots of berries but bb size and growing slow. I’m tempted to dump water on them but they’ve grown wild there without any assistance from me for years.

I live about 20 miles west of Walker and we’ve had enjoyed some good soaking rains. We also had a lot of snow, the water at our place is the highest its been in 15 years.
For whatever reason we enjoy a pretty decent amount of precipitation.

NW Minnesota has been very, very wet for the most part. There is major crop damage in many areas and rivers are high and at flood stage in some instances.

According to the map I’m not even in the yellow.

The lawn is crispy, and the garden and flowers need constant attention, but doing well.

Recorded history in of itself is a very very short history. For instance in my short history of living in the Northwoods it was cold enough to ice fish the first week in November last year and it left me wondering if this was the future of things to come?

There are a lot of people in my neighborhood trying to water their lawns and it’s already too late. When the grass is a light brown or bright tan color, it’s already toast. When it has a gray/ghost colored look it will come back pretty quick with some water. Some people really mow their grass way too short and when we get conditions like this it becomes “scorched earth” like Ice Cap started.

SE Minnesota here along the Mississippi is doing alright. We could use a little rain, but more of a light all day soaker instead of downpours.

The river itself is 3′ lower than it was exactly a year ago.
