Have anyone tried a drop-shot-type rig for bream?

I thought I saw a post in this a month or 2 ago. Maybe someone can chime in who knows.

I saw an episode of in-fisherman that did a show about it in your area.

bream – I knew that has to be someone down south. I’d think a drop shot with a cricket would be deadly on deeper water bream or those on beds as well. I’d keep the weight real light and the dropper rather short. Maybe 6 inches to maybe a foot or so. I can’t think of a reason why it would not work. Let us know how it works for you.

    Welcome to IDO Damon.

I Dropshot crappies at times with good luck and sunfish, or bream as you call them, will get caught using the same set-up. I use a simple split shot pinched on the end of the line and tie an aberdeen hook about a foot above the weight. The hook is tied on in such a fashion as to keep it at right angles to the line. Don’t ask what kind of knot I use…I don’t have a clue what its called. The size of the hook will be dictated by the size of the plastic.

Flies will also work well tied as a drop shot bait.

    Again, welcome to IDO.

I have had some really good days fishing sunfish with a dropshot rig. I use a size 8 or 10 octopus hook rigged 12-18 inches above a dropshot weight. Nosehook a gulp minnow. Game on.

I tried it a little in the winter with 2 ice flies on the line. I didn’t try it enough for a decent sample size, but I think it would be effective. My only concern was hook up ratio using small ice flies tied in a manner where the line might interfere with them taking and holding the bait.

Just to be clear, I was talking about flies for fly fishing panfish during open water. They’re often tied on longer shanked hooks and will stand off the dropper line enough to get fish hooked. I can see where some of the ice stuff would impede the hooking up.

Ah, true. I sort of went off the tracks because my only experience was trying it in the winter.

Now that I think of it, Kevin Erickson from Iowa used a drop shot on sunfish on his annual trip to horseshoe with success. I think I saw that on Facebook?
