This year I’ll be using a clam plate with rigid drill along with a 8” strikemaster lite flite. How big of battery’s are you guys running? Would 4ah batteries be big enough? I’m not a die hard hole hopper that needs to drill 100 holes a day. Will mostly be used in a wheelhouse.
Home Depot has a 2 pack of 4ah batteries on sale for $80 or should I wait for a sale on something bigger? Thanks 
They will work just take both of them. Keep them in a cooler with a handwarmer if going to be out all day. 4 or 5 hours just keep in a cooler.
My brother and I run Dewalt 5ah batteries and can drill 40 to 50 holes with a 6 inch lazer bit with 1 battery on a Clam plate.
Not sure what drill you have, but I have the Ridgid Gen5X, and it stalls with smaller batteries especially when cold. Last year I got the 9AH battery, and it works perfect no matter how cold, and I drill 100 holes easy when I help with kids free fishing day in January. The larger capacity batteries produce more current when cold, in addition to having more energy to drill more holes.
If you have the Octane, make sure you have an Octane battery- there is supposed to be some communication from the battery to drill that lets it produce peak torque.
Also, your 8 inch auger is almost twice the area of the 6 inch musketeer used above, which would cut the holes you could drill in half.
I have the Dewalt 996 20V Max and run the 5 amp batteries. I bring two out with me just in case but one will get me about 40 holes with my 8 inch lite flite if you have about 8-10 inches of ice. The 4 amp will work I am sure but you obviously lose charge faster.
Like said above make sure you have a way to keep the batteries warm when your not using them especially in really cold weather. I guess I would say get the 5 amp if possible not sure what the price difference is.
