Looking to up my chili game this fall. A lot of recipes I’ve been looking at call for the reconstitution and the puree of dried chilis. I’m in a smaller town with a Coborns and a HyVee (a regular HyVee, not a mega store), but neither have dried chilis. For those of you that use them (and don’t grow/dry your own), where do you get them? Target? Cub? or do I have to step-up to a Trader Joes, Lunds or Byerly’s.

Ancho seems to be the most popular, and I use ancho powder all the time, but many recipes call for a variety of whole, dried peppers.

I’ve picked them up at Walmart in the past and you can definitely order them from Amazon. Check them over before buying them and keep them in an air tight container, preferably vacuum sealed. I once had an infestation of pantry moths from a package of dried chilis. They’re usually in plastic bags with vent holes to keep air flowing so they don’t get moldy. Since then I’ve noticed packages in the store with fuzzy little cocoons inside and sometimes even little silk worms. Ancho, guajillo, chili de arbol, cascabel, chipotle and pasilla will really up your chili and salsa game.
