I down rig on Lake Michigan quite a bit so thought I’d try it for walleyes on LOTW. The 1st thing I learned is that 10-20 mph wind out of the west means its pretty rough with whitecaps. The second thing is that the releases need to be really really light. We got several sauger out front of Long Point on Wed afternoon with whitecaps in 30 fow. Thurs day was windier and rainy which shortened the day fishing with my wife catching only a few eater walleyes with both coming on a UV Green JR 5 shad rap. Finally, it was nice on Friday and we went west of “Lems” reef over the mud. It was pretty scattered action until we decided to follow 6 charters further west that all stopped in the same area. It was flat at 33 fow so not sure what the attraction was. We got 3 walleyes 25-28″, several 15-18″ eaters, and a bunch of small saugers. A blue husky jerk (11 cm?) caught the bigger fish and kept the sauger away. I was told to use 15′ leads fishing 5 feet off the bottom which seemed to work.
I was really impressed with the facilities at Long Point Resort and with the service and fishing advice. Its a good location on the Lake for late summer fishing. The other fisherman were also very helpful with lots of good tips. I’m looking forward to trying it again next summer.
