Wow. O-. They’ll have you on speed dial so they can tap you whenever they run a little short. May as well just install a valve.

You’re probably aware of this, but O blood types (both – and +) can be given to anyone with any other type. So you kind of have the duct tape of blood types, it can fix anything. I mean, I’m sure they love you for your personality too, but…

Some blood types are exceptionally rare. I believe AB- is still less than .9% of the world population. So basically there is almost no chance of finding AB- when you need it, so the O’s have to cover a lot of ground.

My mother worked in a small town hospital back in the day and the type Os must have felt like they had Dracula looking over their shoulder ever minute at work. Employees got tapped all the time if there was an emergency and the first thing they did was grab the nearest O.

Going to give today, I’m an O+ Been doing it for years now, I’ve lost my share from stupid things and thankfully have never needed to receive blood.

In the past I’ve donated on a regular basis. Unfortunately I take a blood thinner now and I am barred from donating.

A big thanks to all those out there who can and do give blood. The world is a better place because of your efforts.

Glenn – thanks for donating and your post. I can tell a story from both sides of the fence. I donated over 7 gallons of O negative CMV negative blood in the past and you guys are right about being at the top of the list. I basically donated every 56 days and it was used super fast. The other side is that I had to be a recipient of more than a few units of blood during a fight with cancer about 10 years ago which played a part in saving my life! Another thing for all us that are able to consider is to sign up to be on the bone marrow donation list. If you are ever called to donate you can save someone’s life. I received a stem cell transplant over 9 years ago and am cancer free!

thanks john-o!!!!!! hope all continues to go well. I also received some blood when I had my bypass surgery.

I am also an organ donor per my drivers license but gotta be honest I am a bit hesitant to do the bone marrow thing but I am seriously thinking about it after hearing on the radio actually this morning of a st paul firefighter that actually did it.

Glenn – I’ve had my bone marrow drawn many times over the years and they sedate you to the point you don’t feel and pain at all. You are a little sore for a few days, but it is no big deal. Everyone should consider joining the Be the Match (Bone marrow) list.

Thanks to all the blood donors you do more good then you will every know. I donated 128 times (16 gallons) before being put a medication that will not let me donate anymore. Kinda miss it. Looked at it as an oil change for your body, out with some for someone else to use and then just generate some new blood.

I’m O-neg too. I went to do apheresis [platelet extraction] after being a whole blood donor for over 30 gallons. The Apheresis can be done every tend day to 2 weeks and is a two hour draw. I’ve done over 20 gallons of platelets now, but have stepped away from the donation thing now with heart meds. I’ve been a registered marrow donor for over 20 years too.
